What's a pretty good snare that is in the 100-200$ range?
I have looked into the Pearl Standard Steel snare, but cannot find any to try in my local stores.

You can always check out e-bay and stuff like that for some high-end used snare drums that go for under 200$. You can also have a look at the Tama Superstar snare drums, if you're into the sound of a wooden (birch, to be precise) snare drum. I think you can get one of those for about 200$ but it might be a little more.

Second hand, an Acrolite will set you back around $100-150 probably. Good snares. Very good snares, in fact Ludwig nearly shot themselves in the foot with the Acrolite. Slightly above your limit ($230ish I believe, correct me) is the Yamaha Musashi, which is also an excellent snare.

I've played the Musashi. Fantastic snares, but too loud in my opinion. The guitar player in my band only has a 30 watt (Hard to believe) so I can't have a really loud snare.
The acrolite seems good. I will look into it a little.

No snare is too loud, it purely depends on how you play it.

My Musashi is very loud, but I play with a loud band, but that's no reason as to why I can't play it quietly either. I've jammed with people using my 15 Watt Roland Cube (playing both the drums and guitar) and never had a problem hearing the guitarist. That's a loud 15 Watt amp, but dynamic control is very important. Acrolites are good snares indeed; an excellent choice if you were to get a good one.

I heard a 14x6.5 maple DXP snare (not sure what model) the other day and it sounded fantastic with a coated ambassador cranked up tight. Was as good, if not better than the renown maple snare next to it. The guy said it only cost $200AUD.

Have you looked at the Chad smith steel snare? That's pretty affordable, especially used.

Thanks a lot for your replies, I really appreciate your opinions.
The Chad Smith snare sounds good to me, except noone has it used in Japan. (Yahoo Auctions) Same with other drum goods, like cymbals and drum sets.

You're in Japan? Once my McKenzie comes in I'm going to be selling my 6.5x14 Gretsch Hammered Black Chrome Steel Snare. The price will be somewhere between $150 and $200, not sure yet. Though I'd have to see how much shipping would be.

The Acrolite is a great, cheap, and widely available snare for under $200. My band mate has one here I still need to set up properly.

The Superstar snare is OK. About what you would expect with a kit snare. I would say it is nothing amazing. I'm still experimenting with different heads and what not. I just threw a set of Puresound wires on mine, but I think I'm going to try them on a different snare because they are a bit mushy sounding.

Don't know what market you're browsing, got mine for 75 US on ebay. Some kid drew all over it in pencil. Pencil comes off of with an eraser. Awesome snare.

I ended up getting a Pearl Sensitone (steel) for 100 bucks. Good buy I think. I just need a snare stand now.

best snare for the money -- pork pie pig lite. cheap and incredible sound.

best snare stand for the money -- DW6000 -- flat base, light -- ideal for just about any snare -- save for the very heaviest.
