Does anyone out there have any experience with these kits? Tell me what you know. Where are these made? I haven't found any reviews on these yet. I like the looks and played ok at the store. Just curious...

The drums are of the quality that you expect from Gretsch. The hardware is top notch, and the bearing edges are flawless, ALTHOUGH, the 8x12 tom that original came with the set had a small dip in the bearing edge. It didn't affect tuning, it was just a flaw that I'm not going to except on a kit of this price. Gretsch mailed me a replacement, no questions asked, and allowed me to keep the flawed drum until it arrived. The pics below are of the new tom. It, like the rest of the kit, is flawless. I should mention that the finish, although similar to the Gretsch Catalina Jazz has more of a vintage "yellow" tinge to it in comparison.

I was this close( shows forefinger and thumb close together) to buying a set when I found the deal on My Renowns. They are made in America and I love the lugs and the tom mounting system. I don't feel you can go wrong with these beautiful drums.

I have a set, as Tuxido linked a thread I made. I really like it. It is very well made, I love the tube lugs which have a very old school vibe, and the tom suspension although I took mine off and use a snare stand instead. I did have one issue with my first 8x12 tom having a bad bearing edge (it had a slight dip in it, but still tuned up and sounded fine), but Gretsch replaced it quickly and easily. The sound is excellent. The toms have a very warm, naturally controlled overtone to them thanks to the 35 degree bearing edges. They're pretty old school sounding to my ears.

I definitely recommend them.

fourstringdrums, if you don't mind me asking, how do you find the 18" bass drum in comparsion to the toms on your NC (in terms of cutting through)? I'm eagerly eyeing one of these kits myself and I may take the trip to try it out this weekend.

While I haven't used the kit in a louder, full band setup yet, I have used it to jam with at least a guitarist and bassist and I found it to be just as cutting and punchy, with as much low end, as the 22's I used to play. But that's given my right leg strength and everything.

Here is an mp3 I made the other day: www.handidrummed.com/grooving.mp3 I have the front head tuned lower than the batter, and to me it doesn't sound like an 18" On the mp3 I did play with the EQ a bit, but even on the original you still probably wouldn't know if I didn't tell you. I do also have a 4 or 5" hole cut in the front head too. That makes a difference.

Niether the Renowns or the New Classics are made in America. They are both manufactured in Taiwan. Gretsch only has one line made in the US and thats their US custom line....

My New Classic boxes read "Made in Taiwan". That said, as for how the drums are made ... according to the Pearl boards, someone posted (so take this for what it's worth as I don't know whether true) (http://www.pearldrummersforum.com/showpost.php?p=1852503655&postcount=30) ...

"USA Custom - Shells and hardware made in USA, assembled in USA

New Classic - Shells and hardware made in USA, finished and assembled in Taiwan

Renown Maple - Shells made in USA, hardware made in Taiwan, finished and assembled in Taiwan ( I THINK)"

Any thoughts by anyone?

Steve

I'm going to post this in the Classifieds thread but seeing as this was open I thought I'd start here.

A seller I had lined up fell through so I just wanted to post here that I am selling my 3 piece Gretsch New Classic Bop kit in Ivory Marine Pearl.

14x18 Bass Drum
8x12 Tom
14x14 Floor Tom

Mint condition except for a few scuffs (barely noticeable) on the bass drum hoop from the bass riser.

Comes with a bass riser and 14x18 Protection Racket padded gig bag.

$1100 shipped to U.S. only. The kit was bought in September and I paid $1700 for them, not including the price of the gig bag.

I'm also selling a 6.5x14 Gretsch Hammered Black Chrome Steel snare, but I'll post that on the Classifieds thread.

I can post more detailed pics if you'd like.

Hello folks,
I got a question about these drums - has anyone seen in live or pics a new classic set with a natural wood finish (lacquer I guess) OTHER than the deep cherry gloss ?
The reason I'm asking is that Gretsch on their web site don't list such a finish as available for new classic series, nor did I see it on the web, but in a local store near where I live there is one (in a kind of light brown color).
They also said they have many color finish available for this kit. ?????
Thanks

I don't believe that these kits are available in the USA.

Here's another finish that I haven't seen in the States:
