Just set up my new Gretsch Catalina Maples (really nice!) but am wondering about the GTS system, is it designed so the toms just kinda 'float' on the mounts?
I've really only used Pearl's system and some other mounts where they are fixed. Just seems kind of odd that they arent more secure but I guess I can see how it would help the sound....

I also have Gretsch Catalina's. After setting mine up and playing for the first time, I found a "rattle" or" buzzing" from the mounts when hitting the bass drum. Like you said, just the weight of the drum resting on the mount on 3 rubber discs. Can't figure out where the rattle is coming from. There is no metal on metal that I can see.

Yes, the toms are not fixed and they just float there as you say. The GTS is no different than any other RIMS system, as they all work this way.

Keeno,
You may want to check the floor tom or cymbal legs to make sure they are not touching each other. I have a one up and two down set up and I kepted hearing a buzzing from what I thought was the mount area. It turned out to be the legs to my floor toms just slightly touching each other. Once I move them the buzz was gone. One never knows.

On my bass drum legs, there are large adjusters that lower the feet, or the pointed ends to the floor, and I had one of these rattling. I thought it was a tom mount but my bass drum is virgin so it had me baffled for a while. Check the feet adjusters.

Another thought...are you using memory locks? Make sure they're tight. They could be rattling as well.
I hate mysterious rattles. My bass riser was rattling once and it took me a week to figure out where it was coming from.

I also have Gretsch Cats, and getting the top head...to rest on the rubber mounts equally, made a hugh difference.... As with all rims type mounts. Now, I have also offset my toms on a stand, and do not have them on the bass at all....

I am having the same issue with my catalina maples. I mount the 12" tom on the bassdrum and I have this buzzing/rattling and I cant for the life of me figure it out. I really want to mount the tom off the bassdrum onto a stand, any suggestions on what stand would fit this tom mount?
Thanks
Mike

Any Gibraltar tom stand/tom holder will fit. That's what Gretsch distributes with their shell packs and sets with hardware.
