I'm in the market for a new snare, and am thinking about a custom snare but my one hesitation is not being able to hear it before laying down the cash.

I'm leaning towards epiarch or spaun, but as all these places seem to use the same Keller shells I would imagine each companies snare of similar specs would sound similar enough. I was able to find this (http://www.pdgood.us/highendsnares.html) page, but was wondering if anyone knew of any other collections of sound samples from any of the manufacturers who use keller shells.

Specifically, I would be interested to hear something like a 14x7 10+ ply maple snare with diecast hoops. It would be really interesting to hear the differences an extra 0.5" depth / extra 4 plys etc make (or don't make!) to the overall sound.

Thanks

Umm... pretty much all the 10 ply stuff is going to be similar. Epiarch does good work and I like what he does with his edges.

For something that's going to last you a bit longer check out http://www.conceptionunix.com

I'm down to my last two steambent shells or I'd suggest one of those.. neither is really suited for the sound you're looking for I think.

thanks for the pointers, and sorry, I should have mentioned the kind of sound I'm after.

This is for use in a punk band, and I'm looking for something with a quick attack, and a big, dry sound that can cut through even when un-miked. The louder the better really!

Anything made with hardwood would cut true anything, specially Bubinga. Anyway you tune it it sound like a gun shoot. lol...

Ok, maybe I exagerated a little bit, but I think that in a close future Bubinga willbecome the reference in drum, at least in rock.
