In the next month I will be ordering a tama starclassic bubinga in 12 13 16 and 22. I'm curious as to why I hear so little about bubinga. Is it a new wood in the drum business? After comparing maple and bubinga I found I like the bubinga sound more, IMO its fuller and clearer. What is your take on bubinga vs maple or other leading woods?

Bubinga is one of the coolest woods of all time. Very full and quite beautiful. The TAMA shells are supposed to be some of the best on the market. Brann Dailor from Mastodon uses them. Killer drums, you'll love them Nothing is going to be as full as those shells.

Here's a pic of my own version of pure bubinga joy a Peace Kahuna 9 ply jazz shell pack kit.
Lots of volume to spare and an amazing amount of dynamic response. Clear and sharp in tone and attack yet very warm and full sounding drums. They also sound much bigger than you would suspect for smaller size drums which I attribute to the general character of bubinga wood.
Love bubinga shell drums for their warm full deep sound and character combined with a clear sharp attack and projection.

Bubinga is louder, fuller, clearer, and lower than maple. It's a wonderful wood. My good friend owns a starclassic bubinga, and it sounds amazing. You will be very pleased.

i think the sound of starclassic bubinga is to hard and a bit cold.
imo the starclassic b/b (birch/bubinga) has a warmer and richer sound. their cheaper too!

Hey steamer that is one beautiful kit, I really like the finish.
I negotiated with guitar center and brought the price to 2100 for the four drums. I don't know how they made that shell pack available or at that price but it's a great deal.

Yeah, I believe so. The Tama brochure says that it's a very hard wood to make shells out of so it's not used a lot, they are probably the first drum company to make ply drums entirely out of bubinga. And it's a more exotic wood species so it's probably not very easy to come by (correct me if I'm wrong, drum builders!).
Nice buy and decent price!

It's a very difficult African hardwood to work with especially in making a ply type drum shell i've been told. The other drum company Peace which made my 9 ply bubinga jazz kit I posted the picture of earlier in the thread is one of a very RARE few making a all bubinga ply type drum shell. A few companies only use bubinga as a outer veneer well others mix select plies of bubinga in the shell construction including a visible inner ply. A maker of custom electric basses I play with descibed to me the difficulties of working with this particular dense hardwood especially when using more elaborate plies like the AA flame grain grade bubinga used on my kit he checked out which he said said was quite an acheivement to form into a perfectly round shell in his opinion.
Don't think Peace or other drum companies making a TRUE all bubinga ply type shell are really making alot of these kits in their production lines in general over other choices in wood for drum ply shell construction for consumers.

I think Bubinga has the best sound for drums but it is an incredibly difficult wood to build drums out of though.
