My opinion would be 10, 12, 16.
I have played on both set-ups. My preference is 10 12 14 tom set-up. I find that I generally like the feel of smaller drums, the higher tuning and sound I can get out of them, and the ability to place them closer together or place them in a way that makes them more comfortable for me to play on them. But it really does depend on you and what style(s) of music you are going to play. I found the 10, 12, 14'' set-up more versitile although I wished the 14'' had a bit more balls for my rock set-up which usually just consists of the 12'', and the 14'' floor tom.. I'd say a 15'' floor tom would be excellent.

well i would prefer the 10-12-14 because of more tuning range.
but on the other hand i dont think i could live without a 16 inch tom

My opinion would be 10, 12, 16.
Not an option I would assume, I think he's looking at either standard vs fusion sizes, not a full choice of toms
I hate standard sizes, 12 to 13 to 16... those are horrible increments, 13s are so ridiculous to tune. Hate it. I would stick with fusion.

Personally, I'd go for two snares and three kick drums.

I have a 12,13,16 but dont use my 13 any more. When i eventually upgrade to a new drum set i believe id go for 10 12 and then a 15. i love the big sound of a 16 but it lacks the versatility of a 14. so a fair compromise :p

I've got everything from 8"-16" (7 toms in all) and I've scaled back and scaled back and was unsing a 10,12,13,16 setup that I thought I liked until I wanted to make setup for a gig with church as easy and quick. I hung my 14" tom off a stand on a clamp and went 10,12,14 and I'm really liking the tone of the 14" with the 10 and 12. I still have my 16" setup so I've got 2 up and 2 down but I find myself liking that 14" more and more. Probably because the tuning range between the 12 and 14 is a little better than the tuning between the 12 and 13 and the 13 and 16. If I was buying new between the sizes you listed I'd probably go 10,12,14 unless you need that really deep growl of a 16" for your style of playing.

I prefer 10 12 14 definitley. I had a 12 13 16, and it was great and all, but the school set has a 10 12 14 and i definitley prefer it.

I'd go with the 10 - 12 - 14. Better range of styles in my opinion, and much nicer if you add a second floor tom (16) to complete the standard progression.

I would be expanding my choices. I personally dont like standard five piece set ups. However I do like a one up two down configuration.

For me at the present but unfortunately unavailable (and I dont know why this isn't offered as standard "funk" configuration) is the 10" - 13" - 16" config so I'm little biased about the 10" - 12" - 14" versus the 12" - 13" - 16". For me, I went with the standard config but if I was buying back a new kit I think I'd go with the 10" - 12" - 14" which IMO is more logic than the one inch gap increment in the other config.

i also like 10,12, 14 over 12, 13, 16. I do prefer 16" floor toms, but I find that I can get plenty of low-end out of a 14 that is tuned correctly. My only additional comment would be that the 14" needs to be a floor tom (legs) and not suspended. I hate em.

For a 5-piece, I'd say my two favorites are more difficult to find outside of a custom setup. Both would be best laid out "one up, two down"
First choice would be 12.14,16 (all mounted), 20" bass preferred over 22 (either would do). Closest I've seen in a while would be the ddrum pocket, though that relies on floor toms.
Second choice would be Russ Miller's configuration...10, 13. 16 (even, but unusual), with a 20 or 22.

I would like bigger drums (bigger than 10-12-14) but having uneven space for tuning ranges (12-13-16) is stupid. So I would go for 10-13-16 if i could. I know the 10" is a small drum but I like the tuning range. I would probably also get an 18" FT to the right of the 16".
Or, I could go with Morgan Agren's 10-12-15-18 tom setup. I like the spacing of 2 inches between two drums and then 3 inches between the others.

I clearly see the trend of the funk configs coming.
Anybody having an 10" tom and a 16" floor tom and a remised left over 13" tom should try that config once and see & hear how nice the 3" gap increment makes nice harmony to your ears.

i use a 12 13 16 and the 13 is a brat when it comes to tuning, but once you get it right its not so bad. They are funny to tune but it just takes some time. Im also 6 foot 6 and feel alot more at home with bigger sizes because of both sound and looks. Maybe if i ever build that miniature city that I was gonna go godzilla on id through a fusion set in there (not ragging on fusion sets)

I really like my recording setup right now:
10" up top
14" & 16" on the floor
14" snare
22" kick
I currently have my 12" to the left of my hats but would normally just not use it. I like the contrast of the higher tone and quicker attack of the 10" up top....tuned right in the middle. My 14" and 16" are tuned slightly lower than their mid-range.

I go both way's (that didn't sound right)
Sometimes I use my 10", 12", 14", with the 20" bass. Smaller rooms indoor gigs etc...
Or for the larger gigs 10", 13", 16", with the 22" bass. I thinks both setups work well in both environments, sometimes I just like playing one kit over another. I will also change the heads on both kits frequently. Clear double ply on the smaller kit, white coated on the larger kit. Keeps me from getting lazy and helps me with my tuning technique.

Well guess I am one of the stupid ones : ) I have only had 2 kits and both have been standard. I have tried out fusion sizes in a store but I really did not like the 10". Maybe if I had a chance to tune it and play around more I would feel different.
I have noticed just recently actually on my new kit that the 13" seems to sound too much like the 12. But I am going to try to tune it a little more lower than the 12 and see how that goes.
Funny I don't remember this being a problem on my 1st kit..ehh maybe my ear for tone differences are just getting a little better.

Cool, I have been thinking about adding one to my set up which is 12, 13, & 16 now. I was going to add a 14FT but was thinking I may encounter the same problem between the 13 and 14 as I have now with the 12 and 13,
so maybe 12, 13, 16, and 18 is the way to go 2up 2 dn..hmmmmm bet it's much more expensive.

I'm using a 2-up 2-down setup with 10, 12, 13, 16. I love the range I get, because I like to have a high top end, but a really deep low end. You know, the extremes catch peoples attention more. At least they do mine. I like having the 16 tuned way low, and off to the side, so that when I use it, it's like a treat. I used to think that 13's were more difficult to use, but I don't know if I'm as much of a believer in that anymore. Either way, I love having 4 toms. It just seems like a complete sentence, when I do fills. Anything more seems like you're trying to emulate Portnoy or Peart (which is totally not a bad thing). Anything less and it just feels like it is lacking.
That said, I am in the market for a new kit, and I can't for the life of me decide what the hell I want.

What!? Rubbish!! :)
I like that my 14" and 16" are suspended on the floor...however, they *are* a total pain to setup if you decide to adjust them. But, the same can be said about legs. Other than that, I prefer not having floor legs on them...as I have more free space to swing my foot under them as I get up/down from the throne...and I only have one piece of hardware to setup vs. 6 floor tom legs.
