YES and NO,

Does that answer your question?

Anything in the book can be played straight or with a jazz interpretation. so the sixteenth note section can be interpreted 4:3. (when you get there.)

I have been trying to play them in between swing and straight..that edgy New Orleans kinda feel..?

I thought that aspect of the book was totally inappropriate. He talks about playing straight eighths on the right with triplets in the left, or, even worse, dotted-eighth and sixteenth in the right with triplets in the left. Didn't he realize that nobody actually plays that way? I say just play it all with swing ride cymbal. Yeah, change up the feel for sure, but don't bother trying to play dotted-eighth sixteenth over triplets.
