In the traditional grip you create a balance point in your left hand at the meat of your thumb.

Then the stick glides through the middle of your hand between the middle finger and ring finger. I refer to it as the claw.

Then you get a teacher, and he shows you how to play the right way.

Any intro book will have a picture of this.

As you know, ALL the questions about hand technique are answered in Jojo Mayer - Secret Weapons For The Modern Drummer! I highly recommend that!

A teacher of mine used to tell me the best way to practice for traditional grip is to simply hold the drumstick with your thumb and side of the palm and practice rudiments or some other kind of exercise in a practice pad, so when you actually play you don't press the stick with your middle and ring finger creating tension. It's somewhat difficult in the beginning but will definitely give you strength.

Look at Derricks video on traditional Grip. Hopefully it should answer a question or two.
