I am a relatively new drummer and apart from a few lessons I took when I first started out, I am primarily self taught. There are a few drum books and DVDs that I personally have found amazing and very useful, but I was wondering what yours were? I haven't been able to watch or read everything, so which drum methods or instructional products would YOU have been unable to live without?

Mine are as such:

1. Railroad Media Drum DVDs
These are great quality instructional packages for drummers of all skill levels. Very high quality and straight-forward information including workbooks to follow.

2. Tommy Igoe's Groove Essentials (Book/DVD)
This is one of the best packages out there and has the best value the price. Good for beginners and advanced players. Timeless!

3. Stick Control
I just bought this one because I was told I couldn't call myself a drummer unless I owned it and used it.

4. Progressive Steps to Syncopation for the Modern Drummer
Ditto.

5. The Complete Idiot's Guide to Playing Drums
This was the first book I bought before anything else. It was a good read but some ideas were confusing. The rudiment and rudimental scores were by far the hardest part of the book. Comes with a CD to help.

6. Jack Bennett's UDS 2007
I just bought this as a supplement to the Railroad Media products I own, but am still waiting for it in the mail. I will tell you how it stacks up as soon as I get it.

So... what does the community have to say? Thanks!

Same here. Add JoJo to my list.

I tend to amass dvd's and books lately and forget that I have them.

I've had New Breed for about 2 years and I haven't opened it *lol*

God, the number of times I've been through that book and

ACCENTS and REBOUNDS, to reiterate.Even better.

My Secret Weapon is that I still use Joel Rothman's Monster Book of Rock Drumming, my first book. Everything is in there, and then you just come up with inventive ways to play against the beats as ostinatos.

I also use Dowd's Funky Primer; there are some tricky exercises in that. And I like Stanton Moore's stuff, Take it to the Streets and the DVD's on NO drumming.

Also Garibaldi's Funky Beat and Future Sounds.

John Riley Art of Bop Drumming and Beyond Bop Drumming.

Kim Plainfield, Advanced Concepts.

And of course:
Jim Chapin Advanced Techniques for the Modern Drummer Vol I and II.

DVDS I like Steve Smith, History of the US Beat and Jojo and anything with Morello.

Well, that;s my routine. :)

Virgil Donati's Power drumming video - the most intense drum "workout" out there I'm sure.

Lang's DVD's are very helpful

New Breed 1 and 2 by Gary Chester

Art of Bop Drumming by John Riley (how I learned foundations of jazz)

Marco Minnemanns Extreme Interdependence

The Virgil Donati play along book has taught me some stuff that would've taken years and years of playing to even think of.

Besides being a Pat Petrillo fan, I'm sold on his "Hands, Grooves & Fills" DVD/Book. Nothing more to say on that except, if you haven't checked it out, you should. And that's all I'm gonna say on that.

Virgil Donati's Power drumming video - the most intense drum "workout" out there I'm sure.

I watched this video a few months ago and after watching the damn thing I realised the entire video's information could be presented in one paragraph of text.

Anyhow, here's my take on the essential DVDs:

- for hand and foot technique: JoJo Mayer's "Secret Weapons" and Matt Ritter's "Unburying the beater"
- for a general approach to playing music: Billy Ward's "Big Time" and "Voices in my head"
- for basic style vocabulary: Tommy Igoe's "Groove essentials"
- for advanced vocabulary, ideas and inspiration: all of the Modern Drummer Festival DVDs (and pretty much any music DVD, CD or live gig)
- for an entertaining introduction to polymetric phrasing: Gavin Harrison's books and DVDs

Books:

- for working on technique: Stick Control and Syncopation (AND A TEACHER)
- for working on coordination: Stick Control, Syncopation and New Breed(AND A TEACHER)
- for working on time: Stick Control, Syncopation and New Breed(AND A TEACHER)
- for an introduction to jazz: John Riley's "The art of bop drumming"
- for a deeper look into jazz: John Riley's "Beyond bop drumming"
- for an even deeper look into jazz: John Riley's "Jazz drummer's workshop"
- for getting to know how to use wide dynamics and linear patterns in grooving: David Garibaldi's "Future sounds"
- for rock: meh, you don't need to know how to read to play rawk...

Best video- Gary Chaffee- "Phrasing and Motion" and "Sticking Time, Linear Time, Rhythm and Meter".

The section on using stickings to setup a groove has really helped my playing sound more funky, esp when you start to shift the accents around. I also learnt a how to apply the double paradiddle sticking to create a half time shuffle groove which sounds so great!

Stickings adds a different dimension to time playing which is completely different to ostinato time keeping.

The most influential videos I have without doubt.

BTW, I posted yesterday about a seller on Ebay who has any Hal Leonard DVDs for about 1/2 of retail. The post was moved to Off Topic Lounge (where I rarely go). Anyway, here's the link if anyone else is interested. Contact seller if you want something you don't see up for sale.
