Well, as some of you may know I was thinking about painting my bass drum head in the style of Pollock and today I decided to do it. First, I taped off my band's name across the center, then painted the whole thing with a thin coat of white primer spray paint. After that was dry I got out the ole paints, put on The Sonics (excellent garage band), and slung away.. It was really fun, and I'm quite impressed with the end product. I'm still letting it completely dry before I put it back on the drum, and I'm gonna do some touch-ups to the letters, but when I do I'll put those pictures up too.

First couple pics are right after I finished, then the last few are the almost end product.
Enjoy!

looks great Dj, just like you planned it. A 'Jackson Pollock' head is a lot nicer than a Remo or Evans head ; )

Cool!
By the way, LYOMVZE means LYOMVZE...love can make blind, it can confuse...and the bright colours remind me of two things loving each other and getting mixed up to one middle. The colours get mixed, some colours work well together but others won`t produce another bright or colourful colour...just like characteristics of two persons living together...some characteristics of the persons work well together but some will just produce a negative contrast in the field of bright colours.

Just what I thought when I saw the painting. ;-)
Good work again!

It looks like you used a smooth head.......I think it will all come off I'm sorry to say.
Looks very cool though.
Next time I would use a coated (spray on) head like an ambassador or emperor and then spray a matte finish sealer over the top (a few coats) this will protect and bond the art work. I am a painter so I knda know this stuff.
Let us know what happens.

I coated it with some spray paint, but I'm still not sure it'll hold, but like I said, I'm going to go play right now, I'll give you guys an official report.

Very nice job!
The kit looks cool too.

As long as you sprayed some clear on it, it should be cool and not come off.

I've painted about 4 or 5 bass drum heads (Smooth White, with acrylics) and they've never had any paint come off.

I've even used glitter.

As long as there's a nice coating of clear, it'll stay on for you.

Great job again!

Thanks, so far it hasn't come off at all, so I may experiment more with this in the future.. Thanks again!

Schweeeeeeeet head, I was thinking about painting or drawing with markers to deisgn a cool logo. We should start some kind of DIY contest :-D

Oh and I also noticed no one asked if you notice any real effect on the sound, it looks like the paint is pretty heavy in some spots, what are your opinions?

And did you mask the edges of your head when painting? or did you just leave paint on the edges?

Haha I would love to do a contest..

It certainly did deepen it a little, but not enough that my sister (who hears my drums alot!) said it sounded the same.. If anything it helped my tiny 20X8 bass drum haha

Yeah I masked the edges for fear that the head wouldn't fit back in the hoops..

great job on the head -- although i was not a huge fan off the kit (first pics) i think it looks awesome on your kit.... sets off the black color nicely. Very nice job.

count me in as another for the toms/women statement. :)

Finally somebody has taken bass head decoration into their own hands, not paying a hundred for a graphic that didnt come out exactly like you imagined it would.

I got a mahogany / red kit.

I wanna paint the head the same color as the kit.

Input and opinions anyone?

Yeah, make sure you do coat it with some kind of primer before hand... I was unsure about whether or not it was necessary, but I put primer on anyways, and my friend saw my head and was inspired to paint his, but did not put primer on and it made a big soppy mess, the paints wouldn't stick and just ran together..

Good job, it really gives the kit some character. And you know it's one of a kind! I have to wonder how well you can see the lettering from far away though. Maybe it's just the lighting, but it looks like it may fade into the background and get hard to see.

Yeah, I dunno about its visibility.. Do you think I should make the letters a bright color or something to make them visible?

Yeah, fiberskyns look like they would just hold the paint without any primer at all..

??? I can't decide if you're complementing me or saying my band name sucks??? Laying off the sauce might help you later on in life...

That might work... I bet a bright red would help. Or, another idea would be to put the black letters inside/on top of bigger white versions of themselves, so you basically get black letters outlined in white. Then, no matter what the background, you get good contrast and visibility.
