View Full Version : Hasenfeffer - A Good Song with Real Drums, Probably

I recently threaded an unfinished project called Ocean of Tears (I've included a link below, just in case). The feedback was pretty positive, so I'm offering another tune featuring the same musicians. Unlike Ocean of Tears, which was recorded on my new Pro Tools-based rig, Hasenfeffer was recorded on a Yamaha AW2816 digital workstation. To my ears, there's a significant difference in sound quality between the two setups; on the other hand, I may just be justifying my recent and silly-expensive purchases (Digidesign 003 Rack, Motu 8Pre, Furman PLC and iMac). Whatever works, I guess.

Hope you enjoy.

I'm particularly interested in feedback on the drum presentation: mixing, panning, EQ, effects, etc. I'm somewhat new to recording, so I'm hungry for good advice.

They are such different songs its hard to compare them.

I really like Hasanfeffer especially, and the mix is cleaner and more stereo-wide in that track to me. I think it may be a bit full in the mid range in places (the toms might need a little EQing) but other that that the sound production is really excellent.

Thanks for the feedback. I think I agree with you about the midrange. Over 20 instrument tracks are competing for midrange real estate, which is tricky. The Yamaha workstation's compressor is mediocre, so I only used mild EQ and reverb on the toms. I think the end result is toms that take up too much space, if that makes sense. Good ear.
