The first video is a double kick ostinato, pretty simple, with me soloing over it.

The second video is a Songo I learnt off Chris Brien's DVD with some soloing over it. My teacher really pushed the tempo on this one.

Good hands, Jivi! very nice playing. I'd try and push the dynamics of my playing a bit, and try n make it more musical.

The afro- cuban was a little too Rock for me, but that doesnt take away from your playing.

good stuff!

Cool stuff, but that definitely wasn't a Songo. The bass drum rhythm you played on that one was closer to an Argentine Milonga.

Wow... That's one of the craziest looking snare heads I've seen. The drums sounded nice. You have a pretty nice touch, though a bit on the heavy side. I have to agree with KC. That didn't sound like a Songo to me, but maybe you were hearing it in there somewhere that we weren't. I definatley felt you pushing the tempo. Maybe try relaxing a little.

But really, you sounded fine. I'm just trying to find stuff to give you feedback on. Keep it up!

Your coordination/independence between your hands and feet is impressive. My only criticism would be to work on your style and feel. Your sound is too violent right now - it needs a more musical attitude.

Wow more comments, thanks guys.

Yeah I've been playing for about two years and mostly what I listen to is alternative rock and stuff, it's only fairly recently that I've started getting into other styles like jazz and latin. I think that's why I have more of a heavy rock feel at the moment, I'll definately take more notice towards dynamics and spacing.

By the songo I meant the foot pattern by itself not exactly what I'm playing, from the book it said that that foot ostinato was a Songo so sorry for any confusion, never heard of a Argentine Milonga, sounds interesting lol.

That snare head is from Evans, I don't even know what it's called myself.

That snare head is from Evans, I don't even know what it's called myself.

It's called the Evans EC2 Reverse Dot. I have it on my main snare and I love, love, love the focused attack it gives with a center hit. Evans also makes this head without the reverse dot (it's on one of my snares, too) but I prefer the RD. Check my sig to see any additional pics (although the snares are pictured opposite of how I usually use them).

On the clips: I am far from a music student and couldn't possibly give you any critique worth more than a bag of rocks. However, I am a music fan and enjoyed both of your clips - for what it's worth.

I think it sounds so violent because the snare needs to be tuned better (it's way too high tuned right now) and because you use a LOT of china cymbal. If I were you I'd cut down on the china crashing (it seems like you're just using it like a normal crash) and save it for the few BIG hits. Maybe for a few of those hits even use some sloshy hi hat hits.

Thanks,

Yeah that snare sounds very high but its a really shallow snare so you could say it's almost a piccolo.

I think I threw in all my chops in both of these videos and I agree that I used that crash a bit much lol. I do have a "musical" version of it where it's much more spaced out, I might post it up.
