the drummer in my band (not me, i play in a different setting) just recorded a drum track for one of our songs, i am new to home recording, so please critique on either playing or quality (tips would be greatly appreciated). To record I used two overheads and a kick drum mic, all crappy dynamic microphones, and applied a noisegate. ANY TIPS PLEASE LET ME KNOW

it sounds like you need to work with the EQ for a while to get more punch out of the drums and more sparkle out of the cymbals.
For a 3 mic recording, it sounds OK. There's such a big trade-off when you don't close mic the toms in the studio because when the overheads are pulling double duty, you can't EQ them for cymbals OR toms, you have to kind of eq them in the middle and hope it sounds good. Either way, the overheads need more highs.
Some compression on the overheads might help too.

i understand about the toms/cymbal balance, whenever i get the cymbals sounding good, the toms arent so good
