It's a young drummer thing, I remember when I first started. tape. paper towels. remo rings. but then i learned how to tune.

I once played with this Metalica cover band. The drummer had this really big kit BUT he had EC2s on the top and bottom of EVERY DRUM.

People use batter heads all the time on the resonant side. Ambassadors, G1's etc.. I know what you were getting at, that you meant 2 ply heads, but if you want to get technical, just about every head a drummer uses on the resonant side can be considered a batter head if you put it on the top.

Yea a Pinstripe isn't ideal to be placed on top and bottom, but if it works for him, why not. I think there were some discussions here about in order to get more even tone across the toms you would put say single ply heads, with a much thinner reso on an 8" tom and work you way down the drums increasing the head thickness until your eached say a 16" floor and put 2 2-ply heads on it. There are no rules in drumming, especially tuning and head choice.

The other tom only has 2 strips of duct tape, and I've seen and personally done a whole lot worse.

I think what he did was beat up batter head too much and is now using the drum upside down.

he's got the young drummer syndrome. it takes a while before someone really get tuning down

I remember YEARs ago now...this kid I knew who frankly was not that great a player got a giant Ludwig kit...something like 8-9 toms ( double headed) and two bass drums...basically becuase his parents had the bucks....anyway the first time I went over to see it and try it out it was a week old....heads were completely pitted.....drums horribly NOT in tune with anything...larger drums "tuned" higher than small ones...resonant head...PITTED as well....it was a very nice kit that went thru some bad abuse....I tried to tune it up for him but heads ( Luwig silver dots) were toooo far gone by then.....I had a Pearl knock off kit that I built over time adding more and more stuff and it sounded much better...I actually took care of the 'Junky drums' I had....and believe it or not got some pretty good sounds from them.

The DWs I own now are something that would have made me have a heart attack when I was younger...in fact they still might;-)

I use batters as my resonants...

man its not some sort of system...you dont HAVE to use certain heads for certain things....you may vomit as you read this post but i have my Sonor Force 2007 kit skinned up with coated emperors on the batter side of the toms, and pinstripes on the reso side.

it works for me, as long as i tune them well. Deep, reverberating, and just damn nice.

i may be a "young drummer", but it works for me right now and maybe someday ill go...."pah, ugh i have to go buy reso skins"...but no....i wont for a while....

Well I just noticed that the 10" tom is upside down, but who knows why he did it.

The picture is of someone playing on a stage and maybe having fun. I would love to play on a stage or in front of a group again. As for the heads who knows the reason.

One of the main draw backs of being young is that many young drummers just can't afford
to maintain their kits. They end up having to use what ever is available at the time.

Maybe in this case the batters were shot so he flipped the drum over to have a fresh playing surface. I'm not sure if we even know if this is his kit or one that belongs to his school or band. This may not have been a matter of choice but of necessity.

At any rate, he's up on stage and I have to give him credit for that. Maybe in the future he'll be able to get his kit sorted out, but until then he's doing what drummers do. He's performing.

it looks horrible!
i used to do that stuff to then we had our first gig and pictures were taken and looked at it and was like ewww.
so i bought new heads and its fine.
