Snare Side head

Hello everyone, i have a little question.

I just saw a DVD in which Jeff Ocheltree explains the head-setup that John Bonham used.
He used the coated emperors on every batter side, and the coated ambassadors on the resonant side of his toms.

But i was wondering what he used on the snare side of his snaredrum. Because i can't quite get which head he used: a Clear Ambassador or a Ambassador Hazy ? (or another kind of ambassador ^^ :P)

Remo calls their snare side heads Ambassadors and Diplomats. They are not the same as the batter heads that share the same name. They are similar to the Evans 300 and 200s. Be sure you're buying heads that are designed for the snare side of the drum and not batter heads

In "regular" snare side heads Remo has 2 different Ambassador snare sides available.

The Hazy (14"= SA-0114-00) which is most common (8-15").

And the Clear (14"= SA-0314-TD) 13-15".
This head has a very low collar and a shorter sustain than the Hazy film head.
The tone is a little less bright as well.
It's like a Ludwig snare side head collar.

As far as I know Ludwig still makes the thinnest snare side head. I still use them on most of my Luddy snares.. Matt

This is a good explanation as there is some confusion about the Ambassador terminology here. I have tried the diplomant and just found it to be too thin for my taste.

No one knows.

I'm in serious doubt that he used always the same heads.

Remo Diplomat Snare Side - 2mil
Remo Ambassador Snare Side - 3mil
Remo Emperor Snare Side - 5mil
Remo Renaissance Snare Side - 2 or 3mil, can't quite remember
Remo Ambassador Snare Side for marching - which is your SA-0314-TD

I'd say it's a good bet that Bonham either used Ludwig snare sides--which he might have gotten free (probably) as an endorser, or the regular Remo Hazy Ambassador...also possibly/probably free...

John Bonham is one of the most popular drummers and he's seen playing your heads etc...if there's one more nickel to be made by exploiting the name of...hahahah!

Unless a Diplomat sounded a lot better to him, he probably would have used the Ambassador weight because he was playing rock, & somewhat heavy most of the time, so the Amb would hold up longer than a Dip.

I say this because the Ludwig, or the hazy Ambassadors would have been the most common, most in-stock back then (& even now) and easiest heads to get..so if something happens on the road...you need a head fast....what's available "in the middle of nowhere"?

I've been lucky to live in an area that's had great drum shops forever, but Ludwig and Remo heads were what you could get (in the 70's) without having to place an order for something else, like Evans, so I can imagine what it'd be like on the road, where there wasn't anything more than a "try and cover all the instruments" type shops that just have a little of everything, and a lot of nothing.

The other Ambassadors, like the low collar TD, I don't know if that was even around back then......
Renaissance heads only came out a few years ago.

R&F, good call on adding the other heads offered though--they're all real different sounding.
