View Full Version : Getting bass mounted toms closer?

I am 6"7" Do not like how far I am from things. The throne point is set where I like my leg relative to the bass pedal.

I am purchasing a Gibralter Ultra Adjust hi hat so I can move that closer to me. (After ordering though I found out that it doesn't adjust for height. Could be a problem.)

Other than skipping the bass mounts and going with stands for the toms or physically moving closer to the drums is there a way to do this? Maybe height or angle of attack?

Is there a mechanism that would mount to the tube coming up from the base that would move the current tom mount closer? (Mapex M-brich drums. 10" and 12" toms)

Just mount the toms on cymbal stands. That way you can find the ideal placement for the toms and then move the bass drum to its ideal place without touching the toms.

Exactly what the Wave said. My new set uses dogbones and clamps on cymbal stands
and they basically can be as close or far away as necessary.

I also agree with the clamp to boom stand idea, I personally use this and its great for being able to adjust your bass without any toms moving.

Tama's starclassic drums have a system allowing you to move your bass-mounted rack toms back and forth on a rail if I remember correctly. So if you want to keep your toms mounted on a bass drum and are willing to invest in hardware that might be a nice solution to check out.

Flip your kick around 180 degrees, that will bring those toms closer. If you like that position, you can either re-locate your spurs to the new front of the kick or add a second set of spurs (preferably matched to the first set) for that really macho 4 spur look.

Some options:

- Mount the toms to a small rack, and 'float' them over your bass.
- See if you can purchase a slide-track type tom mount from either Taye or DW and mount that your bass.
- Switch to a brand of drums that allows the toms to extend closer to you. I've had good luck with Pearl and Sonor, not so good with Yamaha (tom arms are too short).

I have this problem too and i went with the cymbal to stand idea. What i did was take the tom holder out of the bass drum, get a clamp and attach the toms to one cymbal stand that also holds a crash. This saved me buying separate clamps and tomo holders which pleased me :P But youll need a heavy duty stand to be able to hold them obviously

Thanks for all the ideas.

I think I am going to solve thise with mini clamps and tom L-rods. I am going to extend the Mapex rods with the L-rods. This will give me a couple inches of space and be flexible as far as set up options go. The only downside I see is if the Mapex ball mounts can't handle the load of a tome suspended a couple inches farther out. I will post again after i get the parts in and installed (This option only cost $50)
