View Full Version : Swapping free floating shells?

I have a 3.5 inch Pearl brass free floating snare. I know one can replace this shell with the similar wood shell. But is it possible to replace it with a 6.5 inch shell and just use longer tension rods? Or would I have to get the longer free floating lugs too? I realise that the short lugs and long t-rods would look a little odd, but I don't mind all that much. I'm just interested in whether it will be mechanically sound.

Thanks.

You can change shell material, but I do not think you can change depth. I don't think hey sel the rods alone.

look at drumfoundry.com..you can get up to like 4 and a half inches...and anywhere between. so its up to you! and also check there shells too! they have pretty good prices and great shells!

I'm sure I could find tension rods long enough. I'd just like to hear from someone who has used two different sized shells in their free-floating hardware. Does it present tuning issues? Does long t-rods and short lugs make the drum less stable?

I haven't done it... but I see no reason you couldn't do it. Then again I make a habit out of trying silly things and making them work.

I'm almost certain I have seen it mentioned before with no adverse results on the sound or stability issues. I think on these very forums but I cannot be sure. Maybe try heading over to the Pearl drummers forum and Speaking to Gene Okamoto. He is the product manager for Pearl or something like that. I have spoken to him about a couple of things and he has been a great help, very friendly too.

Heres the forum link:

It may be better to send him a PM in this case though as its not strictly a "problem"
