Probably the most important piece of gear on your set which is your favourite. maybe give a realistic option and a 'if i were bill gates option'. Indicate size as well because size matters

My favorite snare right now is the one that came with my catalina club. It is not anywhere near the most most expensive, my dunnett cost as much as that whole shell pack, but it just sounds the best right now for what Im doin.

I've only got the snare that came with my kit and I'm really happy with the way I've tuned it but I'd like to try the signature snares.

I also heard Joey doesn't even use his own signature snare but some other artists signature one I can't remember the name of.

I think my favorite snare is the Elvin Jones Snare drum. I just recently tried it at the guitar center. Quite pricey, but a beautiful sound.

2 that have been with me for the long haul.
Number one a 7"x14" Canwood natural maple finish hard rock maple snare drum purchased in 1983. Incredible warm tone and dynamic range with not a hint of choke at ANY volume. Don't make many standard issue production snares like this anymore at least compared to what i've heard and tested in comparison as of late IMO including some locally made very high $$$$ ones. Made by master woodworker/drum maker Fred Pepper who certainly had the gift for knowing how to make GREAT sounding drums.
Number 2 is a real special snare for me. Made in 1989 by legendary Canadian jazz icon and drum master and I as I discovered later a master drum maker woodworker Claude Ranger. This was his personal drum in his years of performance and recording in the 90's. Made from a 13" cutdown Camco maple tom shell to the size of a 5 1/2"x13" snare drum with all original chrome over brass 1958 Gretsch drum and snare hardware. The sharp and warm tone from this drum is outstanding with just like the Canwood having a incredibly responsive dynamic range and again with not a hint of choke in the mix. After Claude heard me playing this drum at a concert after selling it to me promptly said jokingly I want it back NOW. In his opinion his crowning achievement in snare drum making and a drum where no mistakes have anywhere to hide with it's clarity of response. Worth in hard value priceless to me and I think of him and his amazing level of jazz playing back then every time I play it.

It would have to be my 5x14" DW Aluminum snare! This drum is as good as if not better than the vaunted Supraphonic. I was comparing them the other day and they both have great tuning ranges!

My recently acquired Ludwig Acrolite is a workhorse suitable for just about anything, but I truly adore the Kumu 14" x 5,5" that I've been privileged to play for some two years. Man, that baby blows the socks off my feet with its sound and looks.

Mine with out a doubt would be my 7x14 trick snare. I put some puresound custom 30's on it and the thing is unbeatable. JT talked me in to the S-hoop and that really adds dynamic to the drum. I can get MEAN rim shots that are still plenty fat and the drum cuts right through the mix.
I still love my 8x14 early 80's artwood. That was my 1st "big" snare and I love it.
I also have a Trick copper 6x14. That is a hard snare to beat as well. Much more cut than bottom end.

I have two '70s 6.5 x 14 Ludwig Supraphonics (both "Ludalloy" with pointy parallelogram badges) that nail the sound dead on. I replaced the P85 strainers with Millennium P86s and they're just perfect. I've had Noble & Cooley, a '70s 6.5 x 14 Black Beauty unengraved (also with pointy parallelogram), a 7 x 14 brushed steel Dunnett, and a whole bunch of others. Nothing does it like the Supra.
I second the Yamaha Elvin Jones signature, DROOOOOOOOL.

My favorite snare is my 1989 6.5 Bronze shell Ludwig Black beauty.
This snare sounds fantastic live & recorded, tunes up easily, doesn't choke when tuned tight, and doesn't get tubby and unresponsive tuned for an ultra low fat sound.
A "money is no object" snare drum would be an ID Titanium 6.5.
Those drums as sound crisp and articulate 100 feet away as they do sitting and playing it.
I walked into the store and said "What is THAT?"
The one I played was $8,000....and weighed about the same :)!

I'd probably be running a 5x14 brass snare (most of them sound very similar) if I had all the money I could want. Right now I'm waffling between a Tama metalworks 5.5x14 and a Mapex Black Panther Steel 5.5x14.

I replaced the P85 strainers with Millennium P86s and they're just perfect.
I replaced my P85's with P86's too.
I really like the Millenium strainer.
It's smooth, quiet, doesn't slip or stick, and it looks really cool with the engraving on it.
I like that it's small and not clunky too.

Mhh...I actually fell in love brass and bronze snare drums lately. I love the characteristics of the metal...bites a bit more, still has warmth, nice pop.
I`d love a Gretsch Hammered brass 14x6.5"...or a hammered bronze. Love it. I`m also very curious about Black Panther`s bronze snare drums.
I also really like the Elvin Jones Signature snare drum a lot...but what Britt mentioned: It doesn`t have to be the most expencive snare drum. Yep. I`m really happy with my Yellow laquered Basix custom snare drum, 14x5.5"...full birch, put a coated Ambassador on it and well, it`s nice, poppy, open and ringy and has a great crack. And it`s maybe about $150.

My Pearl Masters Custom Limited Edition Exotic snare drum 13''x4'' (6ply maple)!
although it's not the most versatile snare and it won't do the job for every situation, something is really special about this one, for a piccolo snare drum (which I use as my main snare drum most of the time) it is IDEAL for what I need

Hmmm, I'm not great at descriptions, but it's my favorite metal shell material of all I tried, it sounds similar to aluminum but is a bit warmer. Sorry, I'm not sure really how else to describe it =/. tama bill bruford sign. 14*6
Yeah! The Bill Bruford sig. is a really cool snare!
I really dig that one, and I'm not the biggest Tama drum fan.
Their quality is great, I just don't get off on the Tama sound in general.
I like how they sound when other people play them, just not when I do....if that makes sense.
The Tama Warlord stuff is pretty cool. The shop had the whole Warlord line in when Tama was doing a "drum demo tour" thing.
Same with Yamaha on their snare tour.
The Roy Hanes snare was a stand out.
I can't remember all the details on it, but I DO remember I did like it a lot.
The Elvin snare sounded great, and the JR Robinson was awesome.
I really like that JR snare. The new color is sweet too.
OCDP has a version of the Black Beauty that they put wood re-inforcing hoops in with the wood having the edge (instead of the usual rolled over metal edge), and that snare sounds pretty great.
If I didn't have 3 BB's already (2 being brass like the OCDP shell), I'd buy one.
I'd like to have one anyway, but there are a few others I plan to get before another brass drum.
A 6.5 Hammered Bronze Ludwig with tube lugs being one.
I'll be getting that around the first of the year.

Here's my absolute favorite snare:
8"x14" Gretsch snare in purple nitrocellulose lacquer. It's a maple shell from the '80s that was part of Gretsch's "Vinyard" collection: new/old stock that has been sitting around in their warehouses for decades. This pup was also part of their "2007 50 Snare Extravaganza at NAMM last January. It's just about the sweetest sounding snare I've ever heard, and it's not bad looking, too. Check out this link to Gretsch's webpage on the collection. It's serial number 1301: http://www.gretschdrums.com/?fa=07snares2
My second favorite snare is a '80s Tama Superstar 8"x14" in Super Mahogany. Still looking for one of those to add to the collection...

not to completely blow Pork Pie's horn, but my favorite snare i own is my 13x7 lil squealer, but if i was in the mood to buy another 13 x 7 it would probably fall second to an amber acryllic by pork pie.

this is prbley odd to most, but i want my snare to sound just like my fave recordings and the closest I've come to that is my Ludwig LSR 13" X 3" Maple Piccolo with a muffl ring installed ... I can crack it and do rim shots at acoustic volumes! ...or i can lay into it an make it really bark.... If you need more volume than that....it's time for mics
I've been on the other side of the fence for more decades than i wish to divulge...................(as a guitar player fer godsakes!) IMHO ...if you wanna get the sound and not piss off the band and wreck the tone of the mix ....this snare set up this way will do it!

Yes the Claude Ranger made snare drum is a treasured instrument with a rich musical history played by a true jazz drum master indeed. Fred Peppers Canwood 14" x 7" drum is a really beauty too and the oldest in my snare collection.
Have another current "favorite" snare to add since I first posted on this thread a Peace Kahuna 9 ply bubinga shell 14"x 5 1/2" snare drum. A new sonic beauty to add to a nice collection of very musical snare drums.

I know that snares are a very subjective thing, and most everyone thinks theirs sounds "awesome". I was doing some session work a few years ago, and went in a day early to load in/set up, and start getting some sounds. I brought a bunch of snares, and the producer wasn't digging any of them. So that night I phoned a friend who had just started as a rep for a guy building drums in his house in a tiny little town in southern Saskatchewan, Canada. I asked if he had a few snares I could take as options, and he lent me a variety of descent drums. One however was a prototype wood hoop 5x14 that looked pretty interesting.
The next morning I put it on the stand and hit it, and the producer fell in love with it. I used it for most of the record, and then gave it back. A week or so later I got a call from a different producer that I know, who needed me for some sessions, and said he'd heard those tracks so I need to bring that snare. So I had to go and talk my friend into selling me the drum.
I don't have the biggest snare collection in the world, but the ones I have are commonly revered (black beauty, brady, etc), and this snare made in Saskatchewan has replaced them all for the majority of the work I do.
Now Epek has moved into a Factory in Regina, Saskatchewan, and is making truly world class drums. I know there are others out there who make wonderful stuff as well, I just wanted to ad Epek to that list. Check them out if you get a chance www.epekpercussion.com.

Ive never played Epek, however they did ship a 43 year old vintage set of Rogers to me last year in a deal worked out with my Ebay seller, and I have to say their attention to shipping detail was way over the top. Very very professional. If they apply the same attention to their building processes.... and it really looks like they do, those would have to be good drums.

Matthew, is that you?
You don't know me but i use to play for Gord Bamford back in '99 and you filled in for me a couple of times til i moved to Nova Scotia for a few years.....Are you playing an EPEK kit? I've got 3 kits and about 5 snares. I was actually in business with Ed for awhile until my career took up all my time. I even got to help build one of the Epek kits i have:)
If you talk to Joey M, I let him use my kit this past summer at Ivan Daines' picnic when he played with Duanne Steele.

Thanks Derek.
Beautiful instrument Steamer. Any chance of seeing pictures of the other two ?

Not close up but you can see them in each of these 2 pictures Derek. Just for reference the bass drum in the 2nd pic is one of Claude's 16"x 14" bass drums with custom made maple bass drum hoops and a Indonesian mahogany ply shell from his same drum building days as with the 13"x 5 1/2" cut down Camco maple shell tom made into a snare combined with 1958 Gretsch chrome over brass hardware as seen in the same picture.

I know I'm gonna get a lot of slack for this but i've heard a lot snares doing live sound.
The 7x13 amber Piglite always sounds good.
COMPLETELY agree. This is probably the cheapest snare i own, and it is still my favorite. A close second would the my Ludwig Classic Maple. But nothing beats the pig.

Hi Mark,
Yup, that's me. I think you are right in that I don't know that we ever met, but your name does sound familiar. I am not playing an EPEK kit, although I would love to. Ed sent me one a number of years back that I gigged on for a while. He was still fairly new and was wanting some folks to use them and get them seen. It was a beautiful kit. He's not a big enough company to be giving kits away, and honestly I have enough kits at present, that buying another would not make my wife a happy camper. One day though, I would love to have him make me a wood hoop kit. At the moment the snare that I have is the only EPEK drum I own. It does seem like he's selling a lot more product these days.
Where are you these days, and what are you up to? You mentioned the Ivan Daines show, are you around Alberta again?

I have a bunch of favorites as you can see. One other not shown, Ludwig COB Supraphonic w/ Millenium throwoff.
But the drum that stands out the most is the drum that's second from the left; 1970's Fibes Snare. It is by far the most projecting and harmonic drum I've ever owned.
Not even the newer Fibes snares can replicate the sound of this drum since they did away with the molded black braided fiberglass. I have a newer one and it does not even hold a candle to this one.
There was a reason why the greatest drummer of all time, BR, while endorsing Slingerland in the '70's played this drum.
I have tried hundreds of snares through the years and nobody has been able to produce the dynamics of the original Fibes.

I have two favourite snare drums and honestly, if someone offered my one or the other, I wouldn't be able to choose.
The first is the Yamaha Steve Jordan Signature Model:
http://img3.musiciansfriend.com/dbase/pics/products/regular/5/1/9/257519.jpg
And the other one is whatever snare Brad Wilk uses with Audioslave. I read somewhere that it is a 14x8 Tama Brass Bell snare.

I just picked this up not to long ago, and I've all but erased my longing for a great snare! Mapex Black Panther 14 x 5.5 Solid Steel Snare. It has a really nice crack and just enough clank. It is loud as all get out, and It is a beyatch to carry!

I have to say the best snare I have ever owned is my Ludwig Supraphonic 6.5 x 14. There is a reason why it was the industry standard for four decades, it's a simple design and just deliveres a great sound consistantly. But I would have to agree with drummerjoe7. I to also used a Premier metal snare from '83-'88 and bought another one in '93. Both snare drums made ten years apart had the same sound, a very nice pop when you needed it and just an all around great sound that was very versatile. That model snare is very close to the Supraphonic.

Hey Aydee, that drum sounds as good as it looks. Fat studio sound or crisp concert snare. It can do both beautifully. One of the main reasons I bought it was it's incredible dynamic range for a wooden drum. The solid steam bent maple is what helps. I believe it's based on the original radio king shell design. I recommend getting one.

Unless Omar Hakim used to use Tama, the Mahogany Omar Hakim Snare is Pearl.

Ah favorite snare. I have 3 snares. Out of the 3 I have 2 favorites.
Number one is
My Pearl Ultracast 6.5 X 14. Its one of the loudest snare drums I have heard. So its used for most of my live work.
Number two is an OLD 6.5 X 14 Japanese Pearl Stainless Steel drum that I found laying in a garage in mud and grease. Spent a couple of weeks cleaning and polishing it. This is my main recording snare.
I also have the original snare that came with the kit. Thats a 5 X 14. I will use it at smaller venues when the Ultracast is a bit overpowering.
I use Remo CS batter heads on all of them and Aquarian Snare heads. (Nice and thin and very responsive.

I think my 1920's Leedy Multimodel is superb. Recently went to the studio and brought 6 different drums. Music has pretty heavy guitar driven "shoegazer"... The old Leedy with
screwdriver slot tuning pegs, three reinforcement rings, huge hoops and a depth on only
4 inches won out ( oh hey it's a 15 diameter )
Bought years ago from Mike Currotto - perfect shape. - love it

This is my shamefully beautiful Sonor Artist Brass, snare! Sounds just as good as it looks:) The hoops on this drum are nearly twice as thick as regular die-cast hoops! I also have a DW Edge 6.5*14, a Tama Starclassic 5.5*14 and a Global Custom Walnut 8*14 (also an incredible drum!).

This one ends up on the stand quite a bit. Most of you have seen it before, but I really like this one. Its a 13 X 5.5 DW/Craviotto. Its set up with a Trick thow off, die cast hoops, and a Puresound Super 30 wire. Heads are a G1 batter and a 300 snare side.
