it'd be great sizes for a jazz kit. but nothing else really.

What I'm wanting is a 4 pc. that is versatile. Where I can play rock, funk, ect.

I don't need the loudest kit. I just want a small kit that is versitile.

That's just stupid.

That is a very versatile set-up. You can tune them to almost what you want. A 20'' kick will work for funk, rock, jazz, you name it. So will the other drums of-course

I really like your sizes. they seem optimal for a lot of different kinds of music. Maple is great for jazz, with a warm melodic tone. I'd look into birch and bubinga or combos of the 2 if you want something dramatically louder.

I like your pick tho....... 20, 9, 14 is great!

Great sizes, however, for a bit more tunability on the floor, I would go with a 13 x 14. Square sizing can be a bit tricky with tuning and overall sound.

What do you think of the sizes?I used that same set-up except a 10" Tom instead of the 12" it works great for small clubs and you can play any style of music with that set-up i'm in favor of 4-piece kits anyway. My kit is a export-select and it sounds great so i'm sure those maple starclassics sound even better and with a 4-piece kit it's less time to set up and more time to socialize with people who come see you.

I think it will be a great gig kit, small to move and you can tune them to do anything you want.

*rolls eyes* Says who? I play a set with those sizes, except I use an 18" bass drum and I play mostly funk and rock, with some jazz. Those sizes were the norm for years and are making a comeback in all styles of music.

Those sizes would be perfect for what you describe, especially more so since the 20" bass is one of the more versatile sizes. The only thing I'd personally change is make the 9x12 an 8x12, but that's just me.

Go for it!

16X20 kick is my favorite size kick and I don't own a 20x16.

I have a 14X20 so im not being biased.

Your choice sizes are fine. After that it's head choice and tuning which as most of should know makes the most difference.

And live sound guys will be happier to mic a 4pc kit rather than a monster kit.

Great sizes. Since the 50's, the 20, 12, 14 has been a very common combo. That, and the 22, 13, 16.

Should I get them with the Sound Focus Rings or not?

What would be the main difference in sound?

I think it will be brighter with the rings.

I'd prefer a 15" or even 16" floor, but I've never really been happy with the bottom end that a 14" has. They always seem a tad lacking, especially in a rock context. My next kit will most likely be a 20x16, 9x12, 16x14 to go with my 14x6.5 jarrah stave thats on the way. Just need to get the rest of the money.....

That's one odd-sized rack tom, mate!

my bad... should be 12x9. I wish the order of diameter and depth in drum size notation was standardised, it would end all this confusion.

What do you think of the sizes?

I think those are great sizes. On a quality kit (like the Starclassic Maple) and with a bit of tuning experimentation, you should be able to use them for any style of music you choose.

If I were in the market for a new kit now, I'd go for 16x20, 8x12 and 12x14 and a 5x14 snare. Easy to transport, easy to set up close and flat and versatile in sound. And if I could have those in birch stave shells from Unix, I'd never ask for another drum again.

Don't lie. You know after you got those you'd want some more Unix drums....maybe something exotic in bigger sizes, zebrawood or bubinga....

I use a 20x14 bd and play mostly rock. Sometimes it's not big enough without a mike, but miked up with the subs she sounds great. Especially with the right heads. Take a look at the evans eq4 on a 20" bass drum. It changed my world!

If I played jazz that'd be the exact kit I'd want, sizes and finish. Sounds sweeeet. *drools*

If I were to get a 5.5 x 14 Starclassic Maple Snare, what would be a good combo snare to put to the left of my hi-hat.

Great sizes, however, for a bit more tunability on the floor, I would go with a 13 x 14. Square sizing can be a bit tricky with tuning and overall sound.

Given the amount of discussion and gnashing of teeth about tuning toms of ALL sizes, I'd say square sizes are not inherently any harder to tune than shallow sizes. Most kits have at least one square size drum, especially floor toms. The extra inch of wood will give you more resonance and richness of tone.

As for the rest of the kit, since you are asking, it seems like the snare is proportionally a bit big for the rest of the drums. I'd go with something like a 13 by 4.
