PDP kit's are some top quality gear.

The "higher" lines have great finishes (that are done well).

Other than different woods offered, and high dollar finishes, I don't think that 'regular DW' drums have 1-2,000 dollar (or more) difference in sound quality over the PDP LXE & LX.

I've even heard some PDP (& the original Workshop) drums that sound better than some DW kits.

The covered CX kits are pretty darn nice too.
I know they also offer 10 lugs pre head on tthe bass drum and snare.

That will give you better tuning, and easier tuning.

Not sure how many lugs are on the Ddrum stuff.

The Ddrum stuff I've seen (--a bunch of snares, and 6 or 7 kits)...there just seems to be something missing.

It looks good, but the sound is just kinda weak and lifeless to me.

Maybe the USA custom stuff is cool, but the rest has just seemed flat to me.

I personally wouldn't buy any Ddrum stuff, but it depends on if you really want a certain feature the other companies don't offer.

If I was buying a kit in this price range, the PDP is the one I'd go for. Better hardware too.

But, check them both out in person if you can and see which one does it for you.

If you are just buying out of a catalog...then my vote goes to the PDP kit definetly.

Well, Which one do YOU like better? The defiant has a sweet double bass, and the CX is loud and well, pretty nice looking. I'de go with Ddrum, but thats me.

But yet, in quality, PDP has some nice stuff. Ddrum isn't really that well known for "outstanding hardware", I can say that from expirence.
Still though, You can get new hardware for the Ddrum. And, their kits are nice.

As I was just reading pacificdrums.com, I rethought that. the CX is AWESOME! Maple vrs Basswood is a givin, basswoods nice for bass drums, but toms?
I now, IMO, go with the CX. (with add ons, if you like.)

I owned a PDP FS kit for about 2 years b4 I bought my DW's. My understanding is that the FS is the cheapest and the CX (or whatever) is the most expensive. But thats just because of the finish. It's hard to get a good hand rubbed finish on drums. I priced a DW custom finish (skullz) and the price was not a problem, but they were back ordered by 13 months.

If you can handle a simple black satin, you'll save big $$$.

Now my kit was birch fusion. I had a hard time with the attack (maple is better) and the 14" tom was a bit*h to sound good and just wasn't low enough in pitch.

The problems I had were:

1. About a 1" stretch of a horrible chipped wood bearing edge on the kick. Still sound great though.
2. 1 of the 10" tom lug was drilled crooked and it put a lot of stress on the tension rod.
3. I hated the RIMMS? SIMMS? whatever the mounting system is called. They were supposed to hold the drum by the lugs, not the tension rods and they made tuning hard.

I guess the bottom line is whatever you buy, CHECK IT OUT. Take the whole darn thing apart at the store. Take a pro drummer with you and never trust the store. Drum manufactures make mistakes too!

Good luck.

Wow, as an afterthought, that was not positive at all, was it?

the only thing that really attracted me to the Ddrum was that the rack tom sizes are 10x7 and 12x8 which i really like.
but i dont really have a need for another bass drum and id also have to buy the 14x12 floor tom for it aswell.

i think im gonna go the PDP because i love the look of the Royal Oynx finish and also i wanted maple AND its cheaper so bit of a triple bonus there.
im gonna get the 16x14 floor tom for it aswell. im really quite excited about it now

thanks for the responses guys!

The only thing Ddrum has going for them is cool sizes and set ups and cheap prices. If you want something thats going to last I would go pacific. Also check out the tama superstars if you want something thats going to be really tough!
