View Full Version : Can anybody identify/date this Zildjian ride please?

I bought a kit the other day that came with a couple of cymbals - I'm having trouble identifying this one.
It's 20" and weighs about 2000g.
There's no print left on it (if there ever was print), only the stamp (pictured).
What model might this be? How old might it be?
I'd be most grateful if anybody could help?
Cheers.

It's an A... I'm not familiar enough with the lathing to tell but it's probably a 70's. If the top is hammered then it's a 50's.

Ok, super thanks. I'm not certain how to tell if it's hammered from the top or bottom - I'm just stupid guitarist!
Can you tell from these pics?
Also, is the cymbal any good?

Thanks again!

I'm not an expert but I'm going safe with 70's...
I guess since you're a guitarist you haven't figured it out yet... "good" in cymbal terms have every bit to do with how it sounds not the brand name.. so if it sounds good, it's a good cymbal.. the weight is good so i'd imagine it's a pretty nice sounding cymbal

This looks just like the Avedis line that I have. This one looks like early 80's, though they were relativly unchanged for many years. I am really happy with mine. I do not have the ride from that series, mine is a Schimtar. However, the Avedis line is a great line, especially rock. They are somewhat dark, medium sustain. It will build with long runs so stay on the bell to maintain the cutting ride sound. Enjoy it.

::sigh::
The use of a cymbal is mostly dependent upon the sound of the cymbal... thinner cymbals are typically better for jazz, etc. In any case this isn't an 80's because if you look closely and know what you're looking at you'll recognize the stamp as being different than what you have on your 80's cymbals. ;)
This particular one will probably be a very versatile ride that will work in just about any situation.

No, I don't think there's any way it could be later than 70s - it was bought as part of a jazz kit (see my post relating to the ugly Slingerland) and the (deceased) owner hadn't played in anger since the 70s AFAIK.

Ya know... the bottom looks awfully hand hammered to me... I'm on the fence. I am not a Zildjian guy per say so someone else will have to chime in and confirm whether it's a 50's or 70's....

I had a ride exactly like that on my first kit (it was a gift from my aunt and father), bottom hammering and all, and I was told it was bought in the mid 70s. Now, that's not going to say it wasn't bought in a pawn shop or from a private owner and built earlier than that, but 70s is my guess.
