Hi guys,

Im in the market for a new snare drum, it just so happens to be a Black Panther (I love them, currently using a HH Brass 14x5.5). I am going to go for the Deep Forrest Walnut because from what I have seen they look and sound beautiful!

I wanted to ask your opinions on size. So far I've always thought the "safe" option would be the 14x5.5 because thats what im used to. However I have been tempted by the 13x6. I am not exactly sure what kind of difference this will make to the sound, but I would guess that the extra depth would give more low end, and the smaller diameter would give a higher "crack"?

As with most things drum gear related, its very unlikely that we mere mortals ever get to try before we buy, especially in England, I doubt that any shop will stock both sizes so that I could hit them next to each other.

So input would be awesome!

Thanks guys.

I've just gone through a similar situation myself, debating whether to get a custom jarrah stave snare in 13x6.5" or 14x6.5".
I opted for the 14", as you can always crank the tuning up to get more pop, but you can't tune a 13" down to get the extra body the 14" has. The 14" is the logical choice for me, although I think I like the concept of the 13" more (not to mention its a little cheaper).
The deeper shell will give you more depth and body to the sound, but the smaller diameter will raise the pitch and increase the 'pop' ad 'bite' of the drum. It also may seem a little 'thin' for some musical situations.
I've seen those Walnut Black Panthers and they're great looking drums.
Good luck
