anyone ever tried putting a seperate bell over your ride?. When im checking out cymbals i tend to either like the bell or the body but never both together. The bells that are on the rides i like are too clangy.
I do ride the bell a lot but would it be easy to do, and obviously it would sound seperated but to small bells sound similar same as the bells inside rides..i dont want the bell to overpower the ride?

Interesting idea. I like a ride cymbal with a very spanky bell. I think a cymballess bell would be called an ice bell. I have one of those and they're very clangy. I think the body of the cymbal absorbs and mellows the overtones of the bell, creating the spank sound. Without the rest of the cymbal, you have something entirely different.

True. Bells generally have a high-pitched, sustaining and over-powering sound, which isn't best suited for riding.

I've seen a few people do it, and it seems to work OK with the Zil-bell.
I have a UFIP Ice bell that's pretty good for this and it's about an 7 or 8".
The UFIP Ice bells are pretty pure sounding, without extess sustain, and no clang.
I have a couple 24" Sabian Med. rides (that I use the most), and their bells are awesome sounding.
My other rides (various 22's) also have really nice sounding bells, no clang at all, so maybe I'm lucky to not have to look for a seperate bell sound.
