View Full Version : I need some advice for buying a hihat stand

I'm undecided with regards to buying a good hihat stand. I've tried Pearl, Gibraltar and a few others. The Pearl seemed to be good, but it's hard to tell in a few minutes at the drum store if you know what I mean.

If someone out there has played both of these stands and has some comments, good or bad, I would appreciate hearing them.

My choice right now is the Pearl over the Gibraltar only because the Gibaltar seems a little more "Klunky". I have large heavy feet (15's) so I need a hihat stand that's going to be able to respond quickly. I haven't played in a long time and I was a little boggled by all the choice out there these days. Maybe all the top-of-the-line stands are good enough for the job .

What do you think?

I have an old Pearl. Works great for me. I bought it used from my local shop. Can't compare it to any other stand though. My previous hat stand was half fabricated by myself, so I'm not quite sure what original brand it was. It may have been Slingerland since I acquired it when I bought my Slingerland set years ago.

I had a Gibraltar legless hi-hat stand and "upgraded" to the DW 5000. Yeah, I'll agree with you, all the Gibraltar hi-hat stands that I've played have felt a little "klunky". Pearl would be my choice off the two. And now I'll pitch the Yamaha HS 740.

Looks like a nice stand, do you do any or allot of double bass work? If so I'd look into a two legged stand or one with 3 legs that will rotate to make using your second pedal easier.

I will be buying a double pedal. I'm just learning all over again - I've been away for 31 years (not jail - just doing other things besides drumming). That's a good point, I have very large feet and they get in the way alot - let alone trying to play a double pedal and a hihat.

I've been looking at an Axis Longboard. Does anyone know where I can get the xl2 for under $600? They seem to be pretty expensive - I wonder if they're worth it?

shane ships to canada. i went to his shop last weekend and he had a single on display. it was a extremely smooth pedal.

If you're going to do double-bass, I'd highly recommend a 2-legged hi hat stand, such as the Iron Cobra hat stand, or the Pearl Eliminator hat stand. I regret not getting a 2-legged hi hat stand before I got my double bass pedal.

$530 seems to be not a bad price although I did find one at 1800-in-a-band for $460 ($444 Canadian yesterday - wow - haven't seen our dollar this good in a while) . I'll have to call them about that though. I don't know if they ship to Canada.

Are these pedals made in the USA? Because, if they're made "offshore" I get nailed with Duty Tax in Canada. That tax ranges from about 5% to around 11% depending on what it's made of. Then there's the shipping cost and our taxes (13%). So say it's $50 shipping, plus 24% (11% duty and 13% tax) for a grand total of $684.75 or so. My local retailer will sell it to me for $680 + tax = 768.40. It comes to around $600 from 1800-in-a-band using the same taxes and shipping example.

Either way - it's a lot of money, but hey - I've already got over $6,000 invested in this new kit - and I haven't even set it up yet! It will be my first time in over 30 years sitting behind my own drums. It's a retirement gift to myself. Nice way to go out (not leave the planet - just my job I hope) I thought.

I probably could get that order cheaper in the USA, but then there's shipping, brokerage fees (they always tack those on) and the 13% tax too. My total here came to $890 including taxes. I would rather deal locally anyway - it's always easier if you have some kind of problem. Believe me - I've just been down that road.

I just switched from my crappy Pacific hi hat stand to a Tama Iron Cobra Lever Glide and its like driving a Mercedes after spending years driving a Yugo. Its a two legged stand and made for players who use double pedal (although I dont yet).

But its about as smooth and silent as you could ever hope for and incredibly responsive. I paid $159 for mine and thought that was a great price (bought it on ebay).

I love my 2-legged DW 5000 hi-hat stand I do a lot of singing and the 2-legged stand allows me to put the mic stand whereever I want plus it plays beautifully along with my DW 5000 bass pedal.

Hey man, I have the HS 1100. Overall it's a great stand with great features, but I have one quibble and that it is not the most sturdy stand ever.

I don't mean that it falls over or breaks apart, but that it wobbles a little too much when you start breaking out the eighth notes on the left foot. Granted it is a 2-legged stand, but when playing my bass player's Pearl 2-legged stand during practice I don't have the problem.

It's still a great pedal, but I may look into getting a 9000 stand to match my 9002s.

Ya - I just picked the stand up today and I've already called the drum store to say I'm taking it back. It's not a quality stand for sure. I was disappointed in the quality of the metal and all the plastic parts. I set it up and didn't like it right away.

Thanks guys - I'll be trying out some stands tomorrow.

I'm a big guy with size 15 feet so I want to make sure I have room to set my double Axis Longboard up when it gets here. I didn't like the feel or the quality of the Yamaha (previous Post here).

I'm looking for a functional high quality set up.

If anyone out there is over 6'2", 240lbs and has size 15 or larger feet and has found the "magic' formula and hardware regarding setting up a 6pc or larger kit with douible pedals please contact me

I would very much appreciate the help. I haven't played in decades and I don't want to have to be reinventing-the-wheel here so to speak.
