i've been setting up my 2 18" crashes like this: darker one on right (i'm a rightie), brighter one on left but am finding lots of players are doing it the opposite, the brighter on the right...
how are you all setting up?

There is no SET way to do it......it depends on the music you're playing and your style/movement around the kit.
For me.......brighter is always to the right

i agree there is not a way
x me ad example is the contrary dark on the right but one thing in my opinion is possible to try:
put what you want or need on the left side up the first tom than if it is possible use the ride like a border between two crashes; one dark and full bodied, the brither one for example to make puntaction together with the snare drum "unisono" is a god solution for me

I put the one I use most closest to my ride.

I set mine up kinda like the toms: brightest and smallest to the left, biggest and darkest to the right (of course I crash my ride, so that's all the way to the right!)

For me, the oposite to a piano, where a piano asends (from left to right), my drum setup/cymbal setup desends!

I used to set up the brighter or higher pitched one first. Now I like the larger and lower pitch one first to my left in front of me and the smaller and higher pitched one to the right of my ride.

I like to keep my 16s on the left, and the 18 on the right (soon to be joined by another 18). The 16 closest to my hats is bright. Just to the right of that, is my 'dark' 16. My only current 18 is bright, which is over my rides. When I get the 'dark' 18, it will go to the left of that one, right next to the 'dark' 16. The bright crashes are my main crashes, and those two spots are most convenient for me. So I keep the dark crashes in the middle. My rides are similarly contrasting. The bright one is closest to me over the kick, the 'dark' one to the right more over the floor tom. Eventually I'll have a different 'dark' one that I want to put further to the right, but maybe I'll try the left side ride again when that day comes.

I set up a 16" on the left and an 18" on the right. Sometimes the 16" will be a K Dark Crash Medium Thin or an A series Medium crash. I do use a 17" A series Medium Thin Crash in place of it sometimes. The 18" is almost always a K Dark Crash Thin or an A series Thin Crash.

My main crash, usually the bigger, darker & meaner one, is always on the left side. That sort of positioning makes it easier to play the cymbal with either hand. The brighter and smaller crashes (and chinas) are always on the right side of the kit for right-hand punctuations.

I use 4 crashes, from left to right:
Sabian 18" HHX Power Crash
Sabian 19" Signature Saturation Crash
Sabian 18" HHXPlosion Crash
Sabian 20" HHX Stage Crash
I tend to use the first 3 more as they're the crashes directly in front of me where the Stage Crash is all the way over to the right. I tend to crash ride on the Stage Crash. The HHXPlosion cuts better than the other 2 but if I'm honest I love them all.
