View Full Version : Strange Buildup in Taye SM Tom?

Hey all,

There's been a lot of good discussion about Taye Studio Maples lately, and I finally picked up a jazz kit. Everything looks good about it, save the inside of the 12x9 tom. I noticed some weird buildup around the edges of the screws that fasten the lugs to the shell. None of the other drums in my pack have this (see photos below). What do you think this is? Is it sloppily applied glue? Is it weird mold of some sort? I'm not sure if I should send this tom back and ask for a new one.

Note: I haven't played the drums at all; they are fresh out of the box, and I noticed this apparent flaw.

Thanks for any feedback or advice.

man just looks like glue...does it affect the sound???

i wouldnt worry too much....its really only something superficial on the kit....doubt it would affect anything...

I don't know what that could be from the picture..it doesn't really look like glue but it could be. If you're that curious about it, just take off the heads and investigate. Remove the lugs and remove it. I'm sure it will come off easily.

I wouldn't send the drum back for that. If the screws hold fine and the drum sounds great, it's just cosmetic which you probably will never notice otherwise.

Go to the taye website and email them. You will get an email back from Katy Chen, their general manager in California

I would first investigate further what it is. If it's just some sort of residue that can easily be wiped off, no need to bother them with it.

Have you tried removing one of the heads and finding out what it actually is? Hardly something to lose sleep over methinks

Thanks for the comments, guys. Yes, I'm about to remove the head to check it out. I was waiting for my new heads to arrive (ordered some Aquarians) before doing this so I could deal with the tuning/head changing extravaganza all at once, but I guess I'll just check it out.

I'll keep you posted.
