Hi guys, I've been working on the French grip for a while now, but I always run into one major problem - I can't get my index finger/thumb to grip the stick properly! Seems that after a while, my thumb and index finger positions slip. Now the thing is, I can do this French grip using pencils, spoons etc. - anything that isn't rounded. BUT not on a drumstick. Can you guys offer any suggestions/tips for improving in this field?

This isn't exactly urgent, but it's one of only two potential ways that'll work for me in regards to executing clean single-strokes - the other being using German grip, with the back two fingers locked around the stick - but not so they squeeze the stick, it's relaxed - and the wrist does all the work. My ultimate goal is to reach 240BPM with 16th-note singles (or 120BPM with 32nds, if you prefer) - is this method as effective as French grip in achieving that goal?

And yes, I searched the forums for matters concerning this, but got nothing - so don't bother suggesting that.

Your suggestions/tips are eagerly appreciated.

Cheers

- Adam

Put the metronome on a very slow setting and play consecutive full strokes for a very long time. Keep the sticks' angles and paths of movement consistent, and keep your grip very relaxed. If your grip slips, try to fix the problem on the fly. Eventually you'll develop instinctual control over your grip and strokes.
