best brushes for folk/rock?

what are good brushes for folk (with acoustic and vocals) and also rock (with electric guitar, bass)?

hehe, well, i've got some and they're way too light for rock, can barely hear them...don't know what they are, no markings...so i'm looking for something else. maybe not the plastic ones that Vic firth labels as 'rock' brushes...

I would not recommend the Vic Firth "Rock Rakes" you mentioned, as I own a pair and their feel isn't comfortable for me, and they don't suit rock well in my opinion.

I own the Vic Firth Jazz Brushes, and they seem like they would do the job for quieter folk type stuff, but for rock, I would recommend another type of brush with more volume. Unfortunately I don't know about brands other than Vic Firth, but you should also consider VF's rute, they are good for acoustic rock.

Whatever your decision, go to the local shop and check out the typesw of brushes available and their feel/sound.

I would think for rock you would want louder brushes, so i would suggest the kind with plastic wires over metal. Check the vicfirth site, i know they have em there. They work great.

Regal Tip make superb brushes and they have a wide selection of them as well (I think brushes are their 'main' product). Check them out, I know they have a site so just search on google.

First of all, anyone who thinks brushes are just metal wires is sadly mistaken. There are different spreads, different weights, and different handles all of which offer various possibilities in sound. Promark has a decent variety of brushes ranging from light to heavy and a few unusual "web" or "rake" things for other sounds. I must say the VF Jazz Brushes are quite heavy. I've played everything from combo to musicals with the Jazz Brushes so I can say they work quite well and hold us nicely. The Promark Light ones I have for example give a smoother swish but aren't well suited for articulate patterns. Regal Tip and Vater have nice stuff too. I would go for something medium to heavy weight as it would be more versatile.

I have been playing the Regal Tip John "JR" Robinson brush, I really love it.
But if you want to start our simple, then just pick up a pair of the "industry standard" Brushes. Regal Tip's "Classic" 583R
