There's this hi-hat sound that's been bugging me for quite a long time now. The first time I noticed it was in Modest Mouse's Float On (on 2 and 4 for most of the song), then I heard it on Dream Theater's Metropolis Part 1 at about 1:45. In both songs, they're just quarter notes: it's a splash sound that's quickly killed.
The problem is that I dunch know how to replicate it. It sounds like the hats are slightly open on the quarter note, then closed on the 'e' immediately after, but when I play it it doesn't sound the same. Any help?

It might be a foot splash or a splash cymbal

Practice it some more. Remember to keep the hats half-open, and don't smash the hats closed -- rather, close them softly but firmly. It's a tricky sound, but you're on the right track.

Its either a very light stick tap on top of the cymbal or as Wave said, a tightly squeezed 'chick' with the hat already in a semi-closed position.
Also, its seems sampled and not 'played' and the engineer might have messed around with it
