View Full Version : Paiste 2oo2 - Recommendations...

So I've been trying to decide what to do w/ the proceeds from the sale of my Roland kit and I think I'm going to round-out my Paiste 2oo2 collection for my auxiliary acoustic kit.
What I'd be interested in:
20", 21", or 22" ride
18" crash
16" crash
10" and/or 12" splash
16" china
I have owned Signatures and I wasn't wild about them, so I'm definitely only interested in 2oo2. I already own 14" sound edge hats (LOVE them) and a 20" Ride...which I don't like at all. I'd sell the ride to put toward the new cymbal set.
So, what I'm looking for are recommendations on which types of rides & crashes you guys like the best in the 2oo2 line. I play mostly rock of the alt, prog, etc. persuasion and I'm not a basher...but I'm not a super light hitter, either.
I like my crashes to project but I don't like them super thick, either. I like a controllable (i.e. not overly washy or wild) ride w/ a large, bright bell. I like a very quick bright sound on my splashes. As for the China...I want something short and trashy (like my WOMEN)...ha! jokes.
Any recommendations and suggestions are much appreciated. I realize it's a subjective thing but I value the opinions of other drummers, especially on this forum...so let 'er rip!
Thanks!

I use 2002's and I have 14" regular hats (not the sound edge) a 22" ride a 19" crash and a 18" crash.
With exception of the 18" crash all those cymbals are over twenty years old and I did not grew tired of them as of today. The 18" I bough as a replacement for a 16" what was broken.
I can only say great cymbals nice sound if you a fan of the 2002 series.

I've been using a jazz heavy ride for a while. The thing is invincible!

I'm looking at either a 21" Dark Energy MK2 Ride, 20" Twenty Ride, or a 22" 2oo2 Power Ride. I like the sound of all three, even though they're dramatically different. The ride is the only compromise I'll make on whether or not it's a 2oo2....I like my ride to contrast the rest of my setup. However, the Power Ride sounds awesome, according to the sound clips on the Paiste web site.
The rest of the stuff I'm eyeballing on eBay are just plain 'ol 2oo2 crashes.

So I did end up selling my various older Paistes and replaced them with a 21" Dark Energy Mark II ride, 18" 2oo2 crash, and 16" 2oo2 crash.
The 2oo2 crashes sound excellent...bright yet warm. I wasn't fond of the Signature crashes and hats that I had, they were just flat out boring. The 2oo2's have changed my attitude toward Paiste completely.
And...I'll go ahead and say it, the Dark Energy ride is what I've been looking for in a *dark* ride all along. It's wash is dark yet the ping is bright...and the bell is phenomenal. It's very controllable and it just sounds fantastic. I like it as much, if not more than my K Custom ride.
Here's some oogling material:

Here's a little sound snippet, me just messing around on the ride. I couldn't upload the mp3, strangely enough (something to do w/ the recent server update on DW?)
Anyhow:

Glad you found the right Paistes for you! And the Dark Energy sounds as good as it looks!

Have you found your 2002 china yet? I play 2002's also and own a 20" Novo type china. A real monster yet capable of a surprising dynamic range. Oh so many cymbals to choose from and not enough money !!

Nope, didn't get a china (yet). I've played an 18" Novo china and it was a bad ass, so I'm sure that's what I'll go for, when the time comes. I've always been iffy about chinas and always end up getting rid of them due to not using them often enough.
I'm head-over-heels for this ride, I tell ya :D

Thanks zam.....It's nice to know that I'm not the only one who feels that way too. In my humble opinion, the Sigs are a big step down in sound quality compared to the 2oo2s. But, maybe we're weird? ;)

Ha! I just replied to you on another thread about the very same thing.

I have the following Paiste 2002s.
24 Ride
20 Medium Crash
18 Medium Crash
15 Sound Edge Hats
I had the Paragon line of cymbals, sold them and got these.
First thing you have to realize is that these cymbals are LOUDER THAN HELL!!!!
I love the sound qualities of both of the crashes I have. I prefer them over my Paragons.
I am still warming up to the ride. Has lots of wash, and I wasn't used to that with the Paragon ride, which was the best cymbal from that line.
I think you would like the 18 medium crash.
Ha! I just replied to you on another thread about the very same thing.
Yeah, I noticed that! So I just had to get my 2 cents worth on that thread too.
See ya!

True. But if you can play with finesse and can play with a soft touch, they sound great for mellow music as well. Especially the smaller/thinner 2oo2 models.

Very, very true.
I was just talking in comparison to my Paragons. The noice level is much higher.

I would agree w/ ya mikei, they're quite a bit brighter than any other cymbal I've played. What I like is, as Ruok pointed, they can be played softly too, and still fit into any musical setting.
I noticed the first time I played my 2oo2s with the band a couple of weeks ago is; I have to pay more attention to dynamics when striking a crash. I really *like* this because I can have warmth and darker tones when I strike them softly...or I can have that classic Bonham, bright explosion. My Zildjians just don't have that dynamic range...as don't the Paragons, I'm sure.
And yeah, the 2oo2 rides aren't my favorites, simply because they're very washy. One of the cymbals I sold to get the new 21" Dark Energy ride was a 20" 2oo2 ride...I hated it. I would highly recommend the Mark 2 Dark Energy rides...you can lay into it and make it do exactly what you want.
I'm definitely a fan of these cymbals. As much as I waffle, I surely would have thought that I'd be using the Zildjians again by now...but they're still sitting over in the corner, on the other kit!
Also, as Ruok pointed out...they're relatively inexpensive. This blows my mind because the Signatures are ridiculously overpriced in comparison, sound-wise.
