I saw most of Bobby's DVD the other week while visiting my flatmate at work - he works in a drum shop. Impressive stuff. All the things flying in different directions confuse my tiny brain. It took me five minutes to figure out which ways was "Forwards" what with them cymbals back there...
Edit: Oh, some content... sorry. Bobby - is there anything specific you've done to work on your ability to pull off those choked cymbal phrases during complex hand-to-hand patterns? There's one thing on the video here ("School") which left me pretty baffled as to how you'd come up with it. Was that a program-and-learn job or have you worked on that kind of stuff in a sufficiently focused way that it just comes out when you're jamming? If this is answered on your video of course, feel free to call me an idiot and send me back to watch it again...

Bobby, glad you graced us with your presence. I just have to say that I am a big fan, since discovering you on Drummerworld, strangely enough, I have thoroughly enjoyed watching your playing. And the DVD was an excellent buy!
Maybe you can visit London one day to do a clinic.
Thanks.

Hello Bobby,
You really sound terrific. Kudos on the killer drumming. You almost make this jazz cat want to buy a double kick pedal and start rockin' the free world. Come up to Calgary and do a clinic! Or anywhere in Canada! We'd love to see you play- you're great!

Good! Another sweat and brain-trauma inducing DVD! I just ordered a copy from amazon.com. The clips look like he takes some different approaches to Joe Francos' double kick dvd.
I can wait to be humbled, and frustrated again by complex techniques...

I listened to a couple spastic ink cd's. If you didn't tell me that the instrumentals were spastic ink, I'd swear they were dream theater or liquid tension experiment.
This is a good thing, because Bobby does the odd time, lick-intensive playing that Mike Portnoy does.

Any plans to be in the Pacific Northwest? Bet you'd get some takers for a clinic and/or some lessons.
Looking forward to a look at things from a pro's perspective!

I just recieved Bobby's dvd "performance & technique"
I have just been watching the extras...selecting paiste cymbals, in the studio and sound check.
Nice crisp snare in the paiste video...high pitched despite it's depth. Nice focus.
I tried only one 2002 ride, it seemed kind of washy to me. But the 2002 Crashes are superb.
I will have to delve into the main DVD as time permits.

Your double bass triplet feel clinic video helped me absolutely change my sound,

Hey fellow drummers,
I just wanted to pop in and say "Hello!"
I'm on tour with Sebastian Bach right now. For the last couple of months we've been traveling across the US and Canada opening up for Guns 'n Roses. It's a killer tour!
I've been playing one of my new PDP kits on the tour. It's a workhorse and sounds great. I'm excited to be part of the DW family and right now they're building me my first DW kit. The color and design is gonna blow everyone away!
I know I've said it before but... I'm in the process of revising my website which will include an extensive "FAQ" section. In it, I answer all the questions on double bass technique, bands I've played with, etc...
I'll let you all know when it's up and running.
Hopefully I'll see some of you at NAMM in January. If you see me there, come up and say "Hello". I love to talk drums.

Hi Bobby,
I caught your show at the Big Easy w/ Sebastian Bach. I didn't recognize you (from other pics) with all the facial hair. I probably saw you in the bar before the show without knowing it was you.
I saw there was no logo on the front of your kick, (plain black) and didn't know if it was still Pearl. I could not get close enough to determine that. I loved the sound of your paistes, and of course the effortless solo you played.
Sebastian is quite a character. I do have to comment that his vocals were mixed *very* hot and I moved around to try to see if it was just where I was standing. Nope...I did get a headache from it.
Anyway, great chops, and you powered the show along! I was afraid Sebastian was going to clip you in the head with that whirling mic...

hi bobby
i'm asking all the pros this question. i think the answers could be very instructive to many of us.
let's say there was a totally new drum rudiment that was suddenly discovered and was so totally applicable that any drummer worth their salt would quickly try to learn it, master it and use it in recordings and gigs. this hypothetical new rudiment is quite hard to play and totally unrelated to any other rudiment. it is so good that you know that the next time you sit in on a session the writer is probably going to ask you to use it somewhere in their song.
my question is: starting from scratch what would be your way of learning it?
thanks
j

01-15-2007, 05:57 PM
hi bobby.
sorry to load you up with questions when you get back on the forum but here's another one...
in the August 1992 issue of modern drummer there was a great and useful article titled: THE 25 GREATEST DRUM RECORDS. because of it i bought steely dan's AJA in a time when i was almost exclusively addicted to AC/DC.
they wrote this article by researching across the industry but in particular they asked some of the top guys for their top ten selections. i'm hoping to do a similar thing here on DW and post the reults in a separate thread eventually.
So if you would be so kind please give us a list of your own top ten (perhaps your current top 10) records/albums. it would be helpful if you identified your favourite out of those and dropped in a line why it is so...but this is not totally necessary. think of it like if you were going to be locked in a remote log cabin for a whole winter, which 10 albums would you take, if 10 were all you could take?
thanks

Bobby,
I realize that you are a virtuosic drummer. I started playing drums when I was 13 but was never really 'serious' until a few years ago (I'm 20 now), that being said I've only taken about 2 full years of lessons. How does one such as me go about becoming a virtuoso and competing with guys who have been prodigies? It's sort of discouraging to see people like Tony Royster Jr. and Thomas Pridgen who were both excellent at an early age.
Thanks in advance for your help. I'm excited to watch your DVD. You and your brother are fantastic.

Cool! Bobby, you are total monster on the kit and I was a little surprised that you weren't offered an audition by Dream Theatre because you certainly have the chops.
As a drummer, I often experience pain on the back and obviously it affects my sound. I started applying liniments and different creams to eliminate the pain. Although it soothes my lower back, still the pain comes back. I was searching for solutions until I found the Ironman Inversion table. Not only the LBP was treated but it also stimulates blood circulation and increases body flexibility. Now I can play drums without worrying about LBP!
People often consider back pain as a normal condition. If it becomes too frequent and bothers your daily life then its not normal anymore. It has been said that inversion therapy has many benefits. It relieves stress, muscle pain and reduces back pain. There are individuals who are tired of the usual medications and opt for therapeutic treatments like using an inversion table.
