I'm puting on my E-5 stripe on Oct 1st... i have 6 months left and really thinking of getting out. i have a lot of good things going for me here in the Denver area and really dont want to risk relocating or getting deployed (again). I'm really nervus though, when all you know is the military getting out is really stressful...

I met my wife and really did not want to do subs anymore. I told them I may stay if they would send me to a target (surface ship) but they said no that I was now too valuable to subs with all the experienece and training I had. Plus they said no one with 12 years ever gets out. So I guess I was the 1st..LOL


It is stressful when you get out but the conversion to civilian life is not as bad as the military will tell you. I was so scared about not getting a job I took the 1st thing that came along, terminix...LOL .I lasted about 3 months there and then a few old buds who got out before me hooked me up with some interviews and I have had excellent jobs since then.

The most important thing is to network as much as possible and try not to burn any bridges. Also have a great resume, pay someone to help you write it if you have too because it is very, very important in getting you interviews. Most major company's absolutely love to hire ex military people so you have a big advantage going in already.

Thanks for the advice... I'm scheduled for TAPS (Transition Program) and I’m also going to see a career advisor and learn how to write a resume... but it looks like I may have to pay someone to write it for me 'cause I haven’t the slightest clue on how.

Well, I never went in, but my father just retired after 33 years. He was a 2 star General. Kind of set the bar a little too high for me...

2 years in the US Air Force, was stationed at Barksdale AFB in December of '98 and that's how I ended up living in Louisiana (Air Force parents as well). Started playing drums in the AF, so I guess that's why I needed to go in. It wasn't for me at all.

I was an US Army paratrooper from 69-71. Got out and got back into music.

These days when I fly I'm just glad I don't have to jump out of the friggin thing.

im not in it now,(to young) but i plan on joining when im 17 to the Jr. Rotc, Airforce. i am going to be a pilot no matter what, so if the airforce wont let me fly cause of my eyes, im gonna go commercial...

That's awesome! My best friend was on a supply ship (the Kiska, I believe) during Desert Shield. Have you ever been to subsim.com? It's a great site with a huge community, with many members being active and former servicemen(and women).

I'm considering NROTC or waiting for OCS later, but I'm looking at going into engineering, and to go 4-8 years without touching any of that stuff will make life a bit harder career or grad-school wise. However, if nothing else, I know I will do either CAP or USCGA.

Unfortunatley for me, my family sees me as being very much like my uncle, who is currently a 2 star admiral after less than 1 year at 1 star, and who is being fast-tracked for CNO. Just a small act for me to follow there ;-) That said, I would be guarenteed just about any career in the Navy, and I'm already (time and weather permitting) getting a flight on a F-18 Super Hornet next week, so its a very tempting deal for me. But my vision changes day-to-day anywhere from 20/20 to 20/40ish so it throws the Lasik guys for a loop and makes flying a bit harder of a choice, and to go SEAL would be a lot of work.
