planet z's are not very good cymbals. there the lowest of the low in terms of zildjian. same goes for the paiste 101's. both of these or low-end sheet cymbals. I would say if ur short on cash, try to buy used. I remember when i first started, i was looking for a new crash. i was considering buying new low end zildjians, but i instead found a used avedis 16 in medium thin crash for the same price and i love it. visit ur local music store and see what they've got, or go on ebay.

Sabian B8s are very durable, nice looking, inexpensive, and suprisingly musical for their price.
The best way to select the "right cymbal" is to go to the shops and try everything in your price range. Buy the ones that sound best to your ears.

My thoughts are always to try to find something top quality used. The new low-end cymbals really are going to be a waste of your hard earned money.

If you happen to have a good drum shop in your area, one of the 5 Star drum shops especially, they will all carry a cadre of used cymbals. Most importantly, they're usually all drummers and will help you out. Explain that you're new to drumming (welcome!) and that you need some cymbals and don't have a bunch of cabbage to throw around right now. A good shop should help you find the best deal now, so that in 5 years when you're ready to step up to a 11 piece, fully customized, double bass, gold plated DW kit you'll go to them to order it.
Here's the link to the 5 star shops: http://www.fivestardrumshops.com/
I was in Rupp's Drums in Denver this weekend and they must have had 75-100 used cymbals on a rack. Not only do you get to hear what you're buying in person, using a pro drum shop will help establish a relationship with the folks at a place that you'll be spending A LOT of time. I like the eBay idea as well, but with a first purchase I'd stay away. There are horror stories all over the place of people receiving cracked cymbals or badly key-holed cymbals, etc. Don't get me wrong, I think eBay is a great place to find great deals, but if you don't know what to look for in a cymbal, or how to identify (other than the glaringly obvious) a damaged cymbal you may get less than you deserve.
One other thing - and this is purely opinion - don't get hung up on brand. Lots of folks play only Zildjian or Sabian or Paiste or Bosphorus, etc. I personally believe that getting the best sounding (to me) cymbal is more important than the stamp on it. If you get to a drum shop and Zildjian A Custom hats are perfect for you and a Sabian AA Ride is too - that's totally cool.

I agree with the B8's. Also, as suggested above.. you gotta like the sound of what your getting. Try to test out everything in your price range before making a purchase.
