I recently attended the Chicago Jazz Festival and was there on the last night where they had the Mingus Big Band. I noticed the drummer having 2 clear Powerstroke 3s on his batter and resonant side of his bass drum. I though that was quite interesting especially for a jazz band. I was just wondering what your thoughts were, and if anyone has tried something similar to this? Let me know!

Well, it probably couldn't be much different than a PS3 clear batter/PS3 ebony reso, which is used quite a bit by drummers. I've used that combo before. I think most guys don't want a clear for a reso because of the way it looks.

I've used two clear PS3 heads on my kick before and it gave a nice boomy (long sustain) sound.

On my Yamaha 20x14 I ran a clear P3 batter and ebony P3 reso. Nice, tight and punchy.

I use EMADs for the funk, and the PS3 clear for the jazzier stuff. Works well for me, except wish the EMAD was a little less 'clicky'. PS3 is perfect!

While I use the Clear PS3 batter/Ebony PS3 combo on my kick drum, it is hard to know for certain that this is what the drummer prefers because so many of the festivals use backline kits to keep on schedule. For instance, I was on the Sioux Falls Blues festival in 2004, and everybody except for Richie Hayward used a Yamaha drum kit. I did use my DW kit on that show but was later chewed out by the stage manager for doing so.
