Alright, my first post ever:

For my High School's battle of the bands (8 months away) me and my friends want to play several challenging (for drums at least) songs, the hardest of which is "Killing in the Name" by Rage Against the Machine. I just started drums this summer and I think I'm pretty good for the length of time I've been playing. I also take half-hour lessons every two weeks. But there's one part of this song that I just can't wrap around my head and figure out:

|----repeat-1x----|
C -x---------------|-----------------|
H ---x-x-x-x-x-x-X-|-x-x-x-x-x-x-x-X-|
S -----o----o--o---|-----o----o--o---|
B -o--o--o----o--o-|-o--o--o----o--o-|

I know this is fundamental, and repeats in plenty of the other songs I'd like to play, but I don't know how to do it at the right speed...

Does anybody have any suggestions on how to get it up to speed quickly?

Hi Mate

It is a tricky little piece to learn for sure but as 99% of us on here will tell ya, slow it right down and get it learnt at a really slow speed. Get it in your head and when you can play it over at that slow speed, remember to relax, and just gently speed it up.

Personally I find if I can play it 5 times through with no mistake then I have got it.

1. Learn every part alone:snare, bass drum, hihat.

2.Practice them starting from 40bmp. Do it for long periods of time like 10 minutes Breath.

3.Start to combine two parts of beat like snare hihat or bass hihat. Again do it slowly for long periods of time.

4. Pay attention to every detail. How feet moves, hands etc.

5. Play everything together for long periods time.

6. Start to gradualy speed up beat.

7.When reach limit-when you can't play it good anymore go back to 1st step.

It might be a torture but it will burn this beat into your motion memory and soon you'll be ale to play it in the midst of night :)

Good luck.

Ignore the tabs, listen to the song and play along with headphones over and over until you think it sounds close. It will be much easier/faster/enjoyable this way. If you find little parts here and there to hard to play, you can always change it slightly.

If you aren't completly comfortable with playing the songs, wait and do it next year, thats what I would do anyways. I already skipped two battle of the bands because I didn't think my guitarists were ready. This year will be great though.

I hate tabs. Its the worst thing that ever happened to drummers.
