i was wondering if there are any techniques to get the best response out of a single base drum pedal.

Only use one foot! (sorry, I couldn't help myself)
Pedals are like your feet, and should be adjusted just for your feel. If you need more pressure bringing the beater back, increase spring tension. If you are hitting the pedal against the base when it goes down, adjust the beater angle. They have so many adjustments that you just have to play with them to get the right feel for just your foot.

Spring tension is the main thing. Its all about how tight you want it. I prefer it semi tight, because i like the resistance.
