Difference between SK1 and SK2

I didn't know it at the time, but I played the end-portion of one of our last shows with a broken bass drum head. Packing up after the show, I noticed the bottom half of the batter head flapping. Scary.

Anyways. I replaced it with a SK2. The sound is great. Love the low end. The muffler ring allowed me to remove about half of the foam I was using before.

So, what is the difference between the 1 and 2?

SK I: single ply
SK II: double ply

SKI is a one-ply and SKII is a two-ply. I've used both on different bass drums with excellent results. If you are a heavy hitter, or use a hard beater (I use plastic side of DW beater), I would use the Aquarian super-thin patch. It gives it just enough protection without deadening the impact.

The coated SKII is a beast. I had a new DW felt kick drum beater blow up on me during a show. I managed to hit the drum with the remaining metal spindle of the beater several times at full volume before I fully realized what had happened (I thought somebody was throwing those little powdered doughnuts at me!). It left a really small, really sharp dent, not quite a puncture, that would've immediately ripped through any other head. It totally shrugged it off like it was Robert Patrick in Terminator 2. After getting the whole bass drum beater situation sorted out, I ended up using the head for another three months or so without any problem. True story. And also, I'm cheap.
