The idea of buying a second kit came to me. Currently I have a nice Mapex Pro-M Studio kit which can sound wonderful but it's a pain certainly to carry around. Now I'm in college and I'n uneasy about bringing the Pro M around. So I thought wouldn't it be great to have a nice just a sort of practice thing that was decent enough to play gigs with too. I would want something different too, not just like a standard size kit. Otherwise I would look into the Catalina Mod or Maple which for around $700 could work nicely. However, I've been thinking about the bigger ones like the Ludwig Accent Custom Zep Set. The only reason this one interets me more than the Catalina Rock is that it comes in White Marine Pearl which is my favorite color. I've been seeing several reviews that say the Zep set sounds pretty good. I've been trying to figure out if someone sells it as just a shell pack though. The whole thing goes for $1179 but occasionally I see a shell pack go for $699. Those have been silver sparkle though. If I could find a deal on a white marine pearl Zep set would that be worth buying? I'm especially thinking about it for football games and stuff. Also, I've got friends talking of starting a rock band and I think that would do the trick too. I would also like to try it for jazz band too (think Gene Krupa). Would this be a kit worth pursuing?

I found a picture of it, and now I'm even more in love with it.

That ludwig in the pic would be my pick. But you could always downscale your Pro-M and take that around.

I gig with the Pro-M and even just bringing two toms around is a pain because you have to bring the stand and such. Plus I just don't want to wear out the ProM any faster than I have to. It's like buying a BMW sedan and taking it on a camping trip. I've always wanted a Gene Krupa type of kit for fun too, so I'm thinking the Ludwig would be great. I've been reading some not so good comments on Gretsch lately so I'm unsure about looking into Catalinas. I do want to see if I can just order a shell pack though and save a bit. There were a few threads around here about people that bought these Zep kits but they just sort of died and not much was said on their sound. Somebody had some sound clips but they were mostly of the toms. They sounded like toms to me, so I take that as a good sign.

I read some reviews about the kit, from my little experience it seems to be a good buy. + Nothing beats a cool Gene Krupa style kit.
That Zep kit is beautiful! But did you know Premier do a simular sort of thing? Its called A Rock Legend kit from their Artist series. I'm pretty sure it would be a lot cheaper than the Ludwig. Check it out here......

I've owned one for a while and gigged it for nearly 18 months and it sounds great! Its definetly available as a shell pack too.
This is mine onstage....

In the US, Premier kits are VERY hard to find. I checked the Premier web site and couldn't find any distributors. I searched online for around 30 minutes and only found two places that carry Premier, and these were just simple Cabria kits. From what I remember, two years ago when I was looking at drum sets the first time around there were a few companies that offered Premier sets and they were quite expensive. The Ludwig kit is just an Accent Custom so a maple kit would be more expensive. I've been checking eBay too for sometime too hoping to find a vintage kit I would like. Thanks for the suggestion though, nice kit by the way!

Darn, this is so hard trying to decide whether I should buy this kit or not. I'm afraid I would use it more than the Mapex and if I did, then why keep the Mapex when I could sell it to pay for the other one. I want to hurry up and buy it before the price gets higher but then as soon as I do, wouldn't some company come out with something better for less for 2008? Then again, will these kits be around in 2008? They are barely being sold now as it is. Musiciansfriend has it marked as the shell pack but the price is the cost for the whole package. I would have to contact 2112 and see if they could order me just the shells. I already figured out I would put Renaissance heads on it. I believe Renaissance heads will be my new friends as I won't have to deal with coating anymore or that thick feel that Fiberskyns have.

I guess Im a little confused, but aren't massive bass drums a pain to carry around as well?

Not if they are thinner and would therefore fit in doors easier :)
