Hey everyone,
I am planning on trying out some other heads. I'm probably going to get some clear powerstroke 3 heads for my toms, and I play a Tama Superstar. I want my toms to sound very dark, lots of bass tones, and a short decay - without sounding dead or muffled to near-death. I have heard some good things about powerstroke 3 on superstars but that's just one opinion. What do you think? Any help is appreciated.

I do like these heads and I think that you will like them as well. I actually used them on some DW toms in the past and they produced the kind of sound you are describing.

Thanks! :)
The additional floor tom that I ordered with my kit is now more than 2 months late, the store where I bought it promised me it would be here by the beginning of july. Halfway through july they said it would be the beginning of august, and halfway through august it would be the end of august... at the beginning of september they told me somewhere halfway through september. Needless to say that I am very displeased with that situation, and I am now in the process of negotiating about getting a set of free new heads with my toms as a compensation (giving a set of free heads to someone who has done a 1500 euro purchase at your store and has had to wait for way too long shouldn't be a big deal). Hence my interest in powerstroke 3 :)

I just called the music store where I bought my superstar this afternoon, they said that they would ship my floortom today and they would indeed send me free powerstroke 3 heads for my toms (10, 12, 14 and 16") because of the delay in delivery (like I said in my previous post the delivery was postponed multiple times, I was promised a new date of delivery up to three times). As soon as they're in I will let people here know how they sound, as I am still not entirely sure if they are the right tom head choice for me and most people here also don't seem to know (at least, that's what I'm figuring since there's only one reply to my question).

I run 'em on my Ludwig 6 plys. 26, 15, 16, 18. Clear P3's batter. Should give you a nice fat sound without over muffling.

For some reason, there is a lack of interest in the Powerstroke 3 on the toms and it may be due to the lack of marketing by Remo. I do look forward to hearing from you regarding these heads. I think that they are great heads!

I'll be sure to tell you as soon as I fit them on.
I actually found a video on youtube of a guy that also plays a tama superstar custom and has Powerstroke 3's on the toms. Here's a link to some dude playing along to Angels and Airwaves (he's overplaying it in my humble opinion, adding fancy accents and fills where inappropriate):

I like that tom sound! But I gotta hear it in person before I draw any real conclusions.

The coated powerstroke 3 will have a more open sound and it will have quite more resonance?

...but what I'm looking for is a sound with a little less resonance ;) less resonance than Emperors at least.

I think the PS3s will work good. I just put clear StudioXs back on my toms after using coated Emperors. Completely different sound. I like both really. I think my solo music calls for a more open sound like coated ambs or emps. In my band, it's more 'rocked out', so I like the muted tone. I think the PS3s might give a sound a little in between. They won't be completely dead, but will dampen some of the higher frequencies. I've only used PS3s on a kick so that's all I have to compare to.
