Can anyone tell me about the Gretsch Catalina Birch or Ash sets. What do they sound like compared to the Catalina Maple and what styles of music would you use them for?

I don't know if this will help but go to www.indoorstorm.com. They have sound clips of both Catalina Ash and Maple. Remember, though, the sound is probably different in person.

I own a catalina birch kit. They have great highs and deep lows. Not a ton of midrange though. I use my kit for playing with different bands with different styles from indie college rock to classic rock. I would say they would sound best with funk or progressive rock of some kind Ive found them to be quite versatile. But many drum kits are versatile. Just change the heads =)
As far as the maple I liked the birch better because of the range of sound I could get. and the floor tom for the catalina is surprisingly deep for being 14" You tune that baby right with some nice heads and wow..

I have a Catalina Birch. I was really impressed with the punchy tone of the toms and the deep bass. However snare is kind of hard to tune, and sounds a little weird at first. Concerning the maple kit, I haven't played a Catalina maple, but from what I have hear, it is inferior to the birch.
