If all else fails, open up your software mixer, choose "Stereo Mix" as your recording source, hit record on your favorite sound editing software and hit play on your video player software.

Not being stupid but can you not just use Windows Movie Maker or any other equivalent. I would have thought so x

Yes. Open the avi in Movie Maker, and when it comes up, click on the video part in the timeline and click delete. Then you'd have to save it is a WMA and convert it to MP3. But an easier way to do it would be to download GoldWave (which is free and the same program I'd use to convert the WMA), open the avi in that and then save it as mp3. It might be a video format, but it will still load and give you the audio only.

That's neat! I hadn't thought of trying that.

I use windows movie maker for that all the time, works great.
Another easy way, search for Media Converter. There's a standalone program you can download now and it works really well. Good simple interface with a lot of options to convert lots of different video formats to another video format or audio. I use it and it's a well made piece of software.
