Well thanks to a little hard searching I stumbled into a deal that was too good to pass up on some new cymbals. The first is a 1960's Zildjian K Istanbul. Those of you that are into vintage gear know this is one of the more sought after cymbals out there. Unfortunately it's an 18 so we'll see how it fits in with my sound as I'd REALLY prefer a 20 or 22 but it's in excellent shape and these fetch silly money a lot of the time.

Those of you that aren't into the vintage stuff.... The Istanbul K's were the sound that nearly every cymbal company tried to copy. In fact this particular cymbal was picked up at the Paiste cymbalsmith factory because they had it there trying to replicate the sound. Pretty cool history behind it. You'll notice it's hand hammered and the cymbalsmith's signature is on the underside of the bell.

Next up... an old 20" Bosphorus... I'm still trying to find information to date this one. Obviously hand hammered and the logo isn't like this anymore. Can't wait to hear this one played.

Unfortunately I'm stuck at work for the next 6 hours so it'll be a while till I can sit down and hear these.

They are lovely.

And welcome to the Bos clan.

That is my first Bos for sure. Apparently that may be one of the first Bosphorus' made from what I'm finding actually... lol

I've always been a Paiste Signature guy so I'm looking to bring something a bit different into the mix. Going to be quite different having these two guys compared to my Sigs. However, as I mentioned the deal was entirely too good to pass up.

I'll get some better photos later when I have my camera and I'm not at work but these are definitely two beauty's.

Email that Bosphorus to tony@cymbalsonly.com He may be able to give you more history behind it.

Great finds!

Actually went and emailed Michael there... got a response in less than 10 minutes

Tim: Thanks for playing our stuff. I’ve only seen a few of those markings. It’s a logo from when they first started, like 97 or so. Soon after, they adopted the new logo which we still use today. The cymbals have always been made the same way. Also, we have made some adjustments over the years in the weight designations and series names we choose to carry in the US. The 20” Ephesis crash/ride had normal lathing on the top with an unlathed bottom. I’m not sure I’ve ever seen one of those before, but it is a genuine Bos plate. The real key of course is the sound. If you dig it, that’s the most important thing. Hope this has been of help.

Yes, great great additions for sure!
How much was the K, how much that Bosphorus?

And how thin?

The Bosphorus looks like Istanbul Agop Vezir Rides to me...

Let's just say I got an awesome deal. The K's sell for around 500-700 on ebay right now. Not sure what the Bos is really worth but I paid less than 200 for it.

You sure you feel ok? You don't look so good. I think you might need to go home for the day.

Those cymbals look amazing. Did you get them though Craigslist, or what? The ink stamp is even still visible on the Zildjian.

Yea.. this goes down in history as my best craigslist find to date. I grabbed a TD6 roland kit for less than 500 a few weeks ago but that's nothing compared to this. Believe me I wish I could say I'm sick lol

Funny that you mention that. I've been on a looong hiatus from martial arts, but I've actually studied quite a few of them (ironically, i never studied kung fu).

Still though, I've never actually seen the older Bos' before, I thought they were only legend.. ha.

I just had to show Callie what the old K's were fetching on Ebay and she gave me the green light on this one. Check out the photos I just took showing off the hammering on the Bos:

Haha... it's taken me quite a while to build up my cymbal stable as it were. Actually I have older 14" Sound formula hats, 16" sound formula crash, 17" signature fast crash, 20" sig dry crisp ride, and a cut down 18" that i may start hammering on since it's been cut to almost 14" now and just doesn't sound good anymore to my ears.

The Zildjian is up on ebay now... Just couldn't get into the sound personally.

I started it at 99 cents... but it's up to 125 right now. Lord only knows how high it'll go.
