Vic Firth Dave Weckl origional sticks.

I just tested some a day or two ago, and liked the feel of them, but being a Vater user I have a few questions about Vic Firth before I get some sticks.

I just got a job, so am going to get a box of sticks, and I think that once I clear some stuff up these might be the ones for me...

1 - I heard that VF quality isnt good - ie The sticks break really easily - is this the case?

2 - Does the colour coating come off?

3 - will it mark up my cymbals?

Ha! I knew I'd find one sooner or later. Durable, very nicely balanced, nice weight, nice bead. I use them a lot. Go for it ,AS LONG AS you dont mind a few red lashes on your skins.. and ocassionally having to wipe down your cymbals

The coating does come off the sticks, a friend of mine uses them often. I can't vouch for the color on cymbals or drumheads, but i'd expect red marks on drumheads. Also, in my experience wood tip vic firth sticks can chip kind of easily, but i use nylon tip sticks and they're usually fine. I'd test the sticks out on a drumset to really see how you like them.

I'd stick with Vaters. I've got an old pair of the Dave Weckl sticks and they're very good, but they're three or four years old. Vic Firths of late haven't been good at all, only the old ones seem to be those which last. I'm now converted to Vater for the time being. The red coating does have a tendency to mark up the drum heads and (depending on how you hit them) possibly the cymbals. I've never had a problem with Vater, but I have had problems with Vic Firth's breaking and chipping quickly and easily.

I really prefer the new Dave Weckls. They're much more balanced. The old Weckl's seem like Dave designed them when was in his Steve Gadd stage because their two sticks are quite similar.

They are somewhat similar but the Gadd model is shorter. The Gadd stick also seems to be front heavy to me; the weight of the stick is toward the tip.

I had a pair several years ago. I wasn't much of a set player then though so I don't remember anything much other than they felt great. As for the color coming off, it looks worse off the stick than it does on heads or whatever. Vic Firth sticks have a better sound in my opinion although Vater sticks are quite durable but seem denser. Pro-marks are fine but I don't like the tip shapes.

The John Blackwell signature stick from Vater is very close in design to the Weckl stick, and it has a regular finish.

I`ve got some, but just for practice...for playing I find them too heavy and dislike the sound of the tip on the Ride cymbal...but other than that (and this is just my use) they are great quality sticks, nice feel actually a well balanced.

About the coating: Don`t worry about it, it is just a colour. Of course it will say bye-bye after some time but that won`t "paint" your drums and cymbals.

For which music would you like to use them mainly?

The styles I cover are rock/funk and Jojo Mayer type stuff (Break D'N'B), but I ply trad grip, so use light touch and technique.

I am slightly concerned about the ride thing, but I tried a barre tip on the Special K dry rde Im looking at and it sounded fine - maybe its personal preference?

It marked up my cymbals, but after playing with sticks with no paint, the paint came off the cymbals.

I have the Dave Weckl Sticks, and they are amazing. I have had it for a while, and it hasnt broken yet, and i hit pretty hard. The color will come off, but only really if you hit the hi hat with the shaft, instead of the tip. It does not mark up your cymbals.

Overall, and excellent stick. It has a great feel for all types of playing.

Well, if you like em...everything is working well.
Personally I can also recommend the orange Evolution sticks from his signature line. They have a "tear drop tip", I prefer their sound and feel. (an alternative to Dave`s Evolution sticks are American Classic 5A)

But remember: Choose what you like most!

I have his wine red sticks, and the paint does wear off and it is painted on my cymbals, but shouldn't be a problem. Great feel and balance, and very light.
