i've played a mapex black panther for about 5 years now, and, although i absolutly love it and it suits the style of music i play i really want to get a fully customised one. because they obviously cost a lot of money from companies such as orange county and pork pie i wanted to know if anyone has played snares from either manufacturer and what they would recommend. I was maybe gonna go for an acrylic one, for that retro look, but is the quality of sound anywhere near as good as a wooden drum?
cheers guys

Pork Pie 14x5 clear acrylic and 13x7 amber acrylic snares are not that much.....around $250.00 or so at guitar center. I have both and they are great sounding drums with a wider than expected tuning range.

Acrylic is pretty dry and lifeless really.. it's all crack and not much tone. There's a bunch of guys over at ghostnote.net that can build you a snare that'll blow ya away.

GhostNote is a forum dedicated to custom drum building... Myself and a few other DrummerWorld members are on there. I just wanted you to get an idea of how many custom drum companies there were out there and give you a few more choices. I mostly do metal stuff but there are lot of guys doing very cool things with wood. http://www.conceptionunix.com is one of the best examples. Francois is AMAZING and his stave shells are the best out there, period.
