As the title suggests I am wanting to switch my setup from the classic 2 Up 1 Down to a 1 Up 2 Down setup (should hopefully beneift my playing and it looks a lot better!) but I am wanting to use the toms I am currently using. I have a Pearl Session Custom with 12", 13" & 16" toms. So would it be feasable to run with the 12" up top and move the 13 down with the 16, I know the 13 is not a typical size to use for this but I really don't want to buy an additional tom and then have one not in use if the 13 would do the job.
I'm wondering if anyone runs a similar setup?

I think it's a worthwhile venture. You will probably need to suspend your 13" tom from a cymbal stand, I'm assuming your 16" is a floor tom. I play 1 up 2 down, I really like it.

Yeah I am planning to suspend my 13", I assume a standard clamp will do this? My 16" is a free standing floor. I am just a bit concerned that a 13" suspended next to the 16" would be a bit weird but I think I am going to try it out.

Thats totally a cools setup. I play like that all the time. I currently have a 10 tom up top and a 12 and 16 tom on the floor. I love this setup. Also at church the kit has 10 , 12 and 15 in the same configuration. It sounds great to me and thats really all that matters. If you like it go for it.
Here is my kit with 10 , 12 and 16

You're changing the setup, not the sound --- why wouldn't it be feasible to use the 13" as a floor tom? You won't be arrested by The Federal Drum Kit Setup Police or something.

Haha, I just wanted to make sure it was an acceptable thing to do. I didn't want it to be like when soemone posts their setup with strange tom angles and you get hundreds of people posting about it!
Anyhow, I'm going to try it and see how it goes.

Then again that puts 12,13 as your main tom positions. The intervals are going to be odd but if that's what you want go ahead....I guess if you cranked the 12 up and loosened the 13. Another option is shifting them around. Put the 13 and 16 as your main ones and the 12 to the left of the 13. So you have 2 toms over the snare and 1 floor tom. You now have the 4pc kit plus one on the side if you want to have it. The little one piece Gibralter tom mount things work great.

i did the exact same thing...well kinda.haha. ok i had 3 up no down. 10,12,14. what i did is converted the 14" rack tom into a floor tom by drilling and putting legs on it. (i would not suggest this if you are not mecanically sound.). but like in all if cost me like 45 bucks for the mounts and legs..so it was worth it. like some have said, it is not gonna change the sound. but it might help in playing and looks!..

I have a 10" tom that I sometimes suspend from a cymbal stand on the left side up top next to the mounted 12". It looks fine. The Ludwig clamp with an L arm was about $30. Try suspending your 13" to see if you like the set up. You can always put legs on later, and have a clamp for an accessory item. Then again you may like it suspended. I think you'll be pleased. It's probably the least expensive route and you haven't drilled holes in your tom if you want to go back up top with it.
