New Mapex M birch....

I just got this about two days ago...i like my pork pie better than the snare it came with though..btw i look weird cuz i had been playing my new kit all day and i was all sweaty and gross haha

M Birch's are popping up all over the place here, lots of users that are proud Mapex owners. Good thing is pretty much all of them are satisfied with what they paid for. Specs?

You bet they are. Used to be Tama had the "big" share of the intermediate/mid-level market. Then the Pearl "Export" took over. Now, Gretsch and Mapex seem to be the new players on the field. Nice lookin' kit kris10.

Congrats on the kit. Just waiting for some specs (don't forget cymbals, too). It's funny you mention the snare thing. I have M Birchs as well and use a PDP maple snare. I dusted off the M Birch snare this past weekend and just can't get the sound I want, but I do enjoy tuning it lots of different ways (different heads, too) and learning from that. BTW there have been a great deal of Mapex and specifically M birch posts over the past month, so don't let it get you down if some people post about that rather than your specific set up. No big deal.

The snare should be almost flat IMO. With an angle like the one in the picture, unless you're hitting the drum at the same angle parallel to the snare, you're not getting the maximum stick return and rebound in your stroke because the angle of your stroke and the oscillation of the head are off. Also if you are holding your stick at this angle, you could have wrist problems later on down the line.

You're right Harry, I have several drummer friends who have purchased new kits in the last 6 months. They have all purchased either Gretsch or Mapex.

TenPastTen, you're not alone in trying to tune the Mapex snare, lots of people have made comments about getting the sound they want out of them. But if you change heads, it becomes much easier. I have a coated Ambassador on mine, and it sounds awesome IMO.

I also agree with the angle of the snare.....mine is very close to dead flat. It allows me to hit all areas of the surface, and also makes it easier for rim shots IMO.

The only downside I'm seeing in Mapex's growth is that the drums are getting more expensive. They used to have amazing quality for insanely cheap prices. Two years ago you could pay $1000 and get a Pearl Export 6 piece or so or get a 5 piece Mapex Pro M kit or like a double bass M Birch kit. The nice thing is that they are all birch no basswood like Superstars or Stage Customs have. Mapex is a great brand but I wish they would start offering more sizes and maybe shell packs or less busy configurations. Plus they discontinued the second best drum color ever--blue ice. (The first is white marine pearl wrap which they haven't done either).

Well you could attribute any price increases with the fact that prices are going up on pretty much anything so it's not necessarily due just to popularity.
