Because you have a bass drum sound at it purest characteristic.

Mine isn't ported and someone from another drum forum visited me, he told my bass drum had the best bass drum sound he have heard since couple of years.

I have 6 sets. Five have fiberskyns on the resonant. The sixth is not a fiberskyn, and is ported. And thats only because the dumbass at guitar center that does the ordering, cant figure out why anyone would want anything other than a SK or Emad.

The best way to mic it is if you only have one mic is to install it dead center about between 6 to 12 inch in front of it. If you have have to two mic then you install the reso one like I said and fit the second one on the batter and mix.

That was what I've read in a recording thread or article somewhere.

If the sound engineer is good then no need of port hole if the sound engineer suck or is lazy then he will request a port hole.

The Fiberskyn 3 Ambassador is the head that cured my search for the snare tone I desired.

Specs:

14 x 6.5" copper snare with a Hazy Ambassador for the Reso with about half of my snare wires on one side stretched away from the center and taped with the smallest possible patch of duct tape. Batter head tuned high, Reso head tuned low-medium.

This configuration (half of which relies on the Fiberskyn batter) allows for a deep, open (not fat) backbeat that projects really nicely and retains stick definition. I keep reading thatn this head is meant for sensitive jazz playing, which I can totally see. Because I notice that there is little tonal middle ground (might have to do with my snare taping) as you tighten the snares, where you will observe a pleasing big tone and soon after, a washy and overly buzzy timbre where the tonality of the drum is squashed.
This head will endure for a long long time. I hit hard and have been playing this for months and it looks brand new and untouched...the etched coating resists wear like no other, and it's an Ambassador even.

I've found that the Fiberskyn 3 Ambassador makes a great reso head for the bass drum too. UNPORTED. I think that's the key to getting the most out of its tone. I used a Powerstroke 3 batter tuned at medium tension and the Fiberskyn 3 Ambassador at lower tension. You get great boom and major beater power, but more "throb" than "click." Great for rock and roll, big band, or any music that would be best emphasized with a gutsy bass drum sound.

Very true. Although I'm a light player, my snare fiberskyn batter head lasted me about 9 years of off and on playing. It still looked good, but it finally wore out. I didn't hesitate to purchase another fiberskyn for the snare and it sounds awesome.

Why port it? go for the vintage look.you will have to go for the vintage sound also (no mic) the best way to mic a bass drum live is the mic inside the port(no overtones)I know this because a good friend of mine is a sound engineer for the likes of John Paul Jones(Zeppelin),Steve Vai,Primus,etc. this guy makes a living at it so I value his opinion.
