So I just thought i'd post some updated pics of my kit.
I have included my new snare, 5.5 X 14 maple 10 ply keller shell, that I painted and put the hardware on myself. More info on the snare here: http://www.drummerworld.com/forums/showthread.php?t=27179
I have switched from emperors to ambassadors on the toms
Before I use to have an emad beater and reso head on the kick drum which I just didnt think sounded "right". (and people on here give me a hard time for having a black reso head on a 1967 ludwig kit...hehe)
So I decided to put coated ambassadors on both sides. I used a 4" felt stripe on the beater side and then a 2 inch felt strip on the reso side. Nothing inside the kick. Also on the reso side I put an 8" hole off center!!
Why an 8" inch whole you might be asking?
It's been my experience if a kick drum has a small hole of 4-5 inches on the reso head lots of air is pushed threw that hole. In most cases I will place the mic inside the whole and it will sound good but to me never has the sound I'd like to hear especially when using just one mic on the kick. If the mic is placed right outside the hole and close, a lot of air hits the mic causing the low end to be muddy and poofy. The only way to deal with this is back the mic further away from the whole but the downside is there will be more leakage from the rest of the kit into the kick drum mic and the attack and drum shell tone will be lessened.
In comes the 8 inch hole.
Air is still being pushed through the 8 inch hole but its not as drastic as the amount of air being pushed through a 4-5 inch whole. This allows me to place the mic right outside the hole and still get the reso head sound but the larger hole still captures lot of the inside kick sound..(attack, drum shell mojo).
I keep my drums at the place I do live sound and recently a band used my kit. When I miked the kit, I placed the kick drum mic (audix D6) an few inches inside the whole....too much attack but then when I placed the mic right outside the whole...PURE MAGIC. no EQ needed. I usually dont use this word to describe drum sounds but it was SEXY.
