EC1's Who's Tried em?

i have a custom keller maple kit. and i use g2's right now, they sound clear and bright. but i want to experiment a bit. i was thinking about trying the ec's

see i've played the ec2's on a yamaha absolute maple custom set one time. sounded phenomenal, but i've heard them on lower end kits. and sounded way too dead. so..... i heard about the ec1's coming out. sounds like it gives you the bright tone and resonance of a 1ply but the depth/control of a 2ply.

has anyone tried these yet? or any of the ec1 or ec2 coated and found those better for depth/warmth/beef/bright

yeah that's right, i said beef, i dig the low end toms but that are not dead as a doornail when it comes to resonance and tone.

I tried the coated EC1's. Compared to the EC2's, the EC1's are just a little bit more open. So if you feel that the EC2's are too dead on a particular drum, go to the EC1. I used to put EC1's on smaller drums like 8-10 and then the EC2's on larger. But given your setup I probably would personally put EC1's on your 12 and the EC2 on the 16 for a more balanced sound.

I've used the clear EC1s and EC2s. Like four strings said the EC1s are a little more open sounding.

I like the EC2s a lot and they are great for rock. The heads are very loud.

I have a set of EC1s on one of my Dee Dub kits and they sound good. I think I like the EC2s better. They seem to have a deeper and punchier sound. Both heads are very similar.

Either way you'll get a nice sound out of them.

How do EC compare to powerstrokes? Very similar?

I'm amazed about the EC hype but remo's been doing powerstrokes for decades and no one seems to bother about powerstrokes on toms.

My experience with power stoke heads is limited, but I have used them. The power stoke uses a muffling ring under the head like the Evans Genera series. Kinda like adding a studio ring to the underneath of the head. They are very dry sounding heads.

The EC series uses an edge control ring, and there is a lot less material being added to the head to control the over tones. Less material produces a more open sound given heads of a similar thickness.

I wouldn't say there is a lot of hype associated with the EC heads. Anytime a new head is introduced it generates a lot of excitement in the drumming community. It opens up alternative sound possibilities. It's not like a new head comes out every other month.

There are some tried and true combinations that work over a wide spectrum.

1. Ambassadors over ambassadors.
2. Emperors over ambassadors.
3. Pins over Ambassadors
4. G1s over G1s
5. G2s over G1s
6. ECs over G1s
7. Super 2s over classic clears
8. PIIs over classic clears

Just to mention a few.

Add a mix of coated and/or clear combinations. and the list goes on, but some of the above combos are pretty safe bets. From there some drummers tend to stray from the classic combos and individualize their sound by using more specialized heads.
