My "new home made custom" snare drum

Ok, so I know this has been done a million times, but I like to think I'm special, because this snare is a snare from sears. Yes, it is. But, after I sanded the shell, re-did the edges, and Wripped the awful wrap of and put clear stain on it, this snare is one beauty. I put an old ambassador, and remo emperor snare on side, this drum sounds awsome, and looks awsome. I replaced with cheap hardware and rims. I will post sound video later, but for now, here are some pics. Enjoy!!!!!!!!

man...that top hoop is in awful shape....
for a cheap, home-made drum, it looks like you got exactly what you were going for!

ha ha, sorry mate. It's the angle of the pic. The hoop is actuely really nice. I'll get the video up soon, and Hopefully a better pic. :P

What did you sand the shell with? There are a lot of deep scratches or grooves all along the thing. Maybe you should sand it again then stain it.
The outer ply also looks to have vertical grain so you want to sand up and down with the grain, and not around the drum.

That would be a good idea. The drum was sanded with just regular sandpaper. I'm thinking of doing it over again like you said. Mind you, you don't notice it from far away, and you have to have good light and a good eye.

It looks nice, i think the scratches look good, kind of antique-y, but thats just me.

There seem to be some large cracks running the height of the shell..... or maybe these are just where the wood was sealed in the bending process? I don't know anything about making drums so...... yeah.

well my friends, thank you for the great responses. I just finished sanding the heck out of it, and re-doing the edges, again.... I shall star staining it after dinner, and should be complete by tommorow, if I'm up late. Please keep the feedback coming. :)

The large line you see is where the drum shell had been sealed.

Well, the first of the new coat is on the drum. Looking better already. You can still see the scratches a bit, but not as much. I have re done the edges again, they're now even, and I
just cleaned the hardware with chrome cleaner. I'm just wondering now, how many coats should be on. I planning 2. Any more or less??

well, The drum is ready to be put together. I did a total of 3 coats, and its is now a bit darker, and a bit harder to see the scratches. Pic and video to come....
